Indiana Defeats Northwestern 29-23 After Richard Injury

The fifth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Northwestern Wildcats 29-23 on Friday, but lost starting running back Turbo Richard to a lower-leg injury during the first half. The victory keeps Indiana undefeated, though the team faces growing injury concerns in its backfield.

Richard suffered the right lower-leg injury along the Indiana sideline while being tackled by Northwestern defender Jamaal Johnson. Head coach Curt Cignetti stated after the game that the tackle was a hip-drop and noted that Richard was also hit out of bounds by Brendan Flakes, though officials did not throw a flag. Richard, a transfer from Boston College, hobbled to the locker room and did not return to the field. However, the Hoosiers defense stopped Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles on a designed run to preserve the lead.

Indiana gained momentum on its subsequent drive after a facemask penalty on third-and-19 awarded the Hoosiers a automatic first down. Beebe then delivered a 39-yard run, followed shortly by a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:39 left in the game to extend the lead.

Northwestern responded by cutting the deficit to 22-20. Beebe countered on the next possession with a 70-yard run down to the Northwestern 5-yard line. Six plays later, Hoover scored a touchdown to extend Indiana’s lead and seal the win.

Running Back Injuries Mount for Hoosiers

Richard’s departure adds to Indiana’s depth issues at the position. The team was already playing without running back Khobie Martin, who sustained a forearm injury during the season opener against North Texas. Martin is expected to return to the lineup around the middle of the season.
