NFL Playoff Picture 2027: Bracket, Standings & Scenarios | NewsPixer

The current state of the NFL playoff race — who’s in, who’s out, and what each team still needs. This page tracks division leads, wild-card positioning and clinching scenarios through the season, then carries the full bracket once the field is set. The 2026 postseason begins on January 16, 2027 and ends with Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on February 14.

How the NFL playoffs work

Fourteen teams qualify: seven from each conference. The four division winners in each conference take seeds one through four, ranked by record, and three wild-card teams fill seeds five through seven. Only the number one seed in each conference gets a bye through the opening round; everyone else plays on wild-card weekend. Home field goes to the higher seed in every round, so seeding decides not just who qualifies but where January games are played.

The bracket

Four rounds separate the field from Inglewood. Wild-card weekend features six games, three per conference, with the top seed resting. The divisional round follows, where the number one seed enters against the lowest remaining seed. The conference championships produce the two Super Bowl teams, then a bye week precedes the game itself.

Clinching and elimination

Teams clinch through a mix of their own results and other teams’ losses, which is why the picture can change without a team playing. Tiebreakers decide most of the close calls, applied in order: head-to-head record, then record within the division, then record in common games, then conference record. Head-to-head is why the division-heavy schedule in the closing weeks matters so much — those games settle tiebreakers directly rather than leaving them to formulas.

Key dates for the 2026 season

The regular season ends on January 10, 2027, with every Week 18 game a division matchup and kickoff times held back so the league can showcase the games that still matter. The playoffs begin on January 16. Super Bowl LXI is on February 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, broadcast on ABC and ESPN.

What to watch as the race narrows

Through October and November the picture is mostly noise — records are close and tiebreakers rarely bind. From Week 14 onward it hardens fast: division leads either extend or collapse, wild-card bubble teams run out of margin, and by Week 17 most berths are settled. Teams already locked into a seed start weighing rest against rhythm, which can swing results and affect other teams’ fates in the final week.
