Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, securing his tenure with the team through his 20th NBA season. Curry became eligible on Aug. 29 for a maximum extension worth up to $136.7 million over two years. Instead, he chose to accept a lower sum to provide Golden State with greater room under salary cap guidelines. Curry’s annual earnings will drop from his current $62.6 million salary to $55.7 million for the 2027-28 season, followed by a $60.2 million player option for the 2028-29 season.

According to unnamed team sources cited by ESPN, the structure provides Golden State with approximately $10 million in additional projected salary cap space next summer. The franchise expects significant cap room as several contracts reach expiration. Jimmy Butler III ($56.8 million) and Draymond Green ($27.6 million) both hold contracts expiring next summer, while center Kristaps Porzingis has $3 million guaranteed of a $20 million salary. Guard Brandin Podziemski holds a $17 million cap hold ahead of potential extension decisions.

Addressing the contract options prior to reaching the agreement, Curry indicated that team competitiveness was his primary focus during negotiations. “I want to be on a competitive team,” Curry told ESPN, adding that maintaining flexibility for future team moves was a key consideration.

The extension was agreed upon three days before Golden State begins training camp practices. Curry, who turns 39 during the upcoming season, missed 39 games last season because of a persistent right knee injury. However, he stated that he enters the new season fully healthy, noting that “the idea of getting back to work is exciting.”
