Carlos Alcaraz Saves Match Points as Europe Leads Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz saved two match points to overcome Taylor Fritz in a deciding tie-break, helping Team Europe take a 7-5 lead over Team World at the Laver Cup in London. The victory kept Europe in front going into the final day of play at the O2 Arena.

Alcaraz’s win prevented him from losing consecutive singles matches for the first time in 18 months, following his recent quarter-final exit at the US Open.

Alcaraz Edges Fritz in Dramatic Tie-Break

The world number three controlled the opening set before Fritz responded to level the match, pushing the contest into an extended tie-break. Down 8-9, Alcaraz erased Fritz’s first match point with an ace and repelled a second with a drop shot.

Alcaraz ultimately converted his third match point to secure a 6-3 4-6 13-11 victory. The Spaniard hit 42 winners to Fritz’s 20 in front of an audience that included retired champions Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Addressing his shot selection in key moments after the match, Alcaraz explained that his drop shot “was a really good weapon for me in this match.”

Team World Mounts Saturday Challenge

Prior to Alcaraz’s victory, Andre Agassi’s Team World squad had threatened to take control of Saturday’s session. Alex de Minaur recovered after losing the first set to defeat Alexander Zverev 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 11-9.

In another close match, American debutant Learner Tien defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-3 2-6 10-7 to bolster Team World’s tallies.

Following Alcaraz’s singles victory, Zverev returned to the court alongside Norway’s Casper Ruud. The European duo delivered a 6-4 7-6 (9-7) doubles victory over Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima to retain Europe’s overall advantage.

Heading into Sunday, individual match victories increase in value to three points each. The first team to collect 13 points will take the trophy, with Team Europe seeking a sixth Laver Cup title and holders Team World targeting their third.
