Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has publicly revealed a virtual city he spent more than 12 years constructing inside the video game Minecraft. Tomlin published a video tour lasting nearly 20 minutes on YouTube, showcasing an elaborate urban environment designed around a central body of water.

Origins of the Virtual Metropolis

Tomlin first encountered the game when his children began playing it regularly during middle school. Drawn to the game’s creative mode—which eliminates survival mechanics and grants players unlimited building blocks—Tomlin began designing structures alongside his family. Although his children gradually stopped playing as they reached high school and college, Tomlin continued expanding the world on his own over the following decade.

Reflecting on the long-term hobby in the video, Tomlin stated that he held a lifelong fascination with high-rise architecture and urban planning. He described the building process as “mindless entertainment” and “therapeutic,” adding that it “allowed me to detach from the realities and the pressures of life.”

City Layout and Infrastructure

The virtual city centers on dense high-rise development surrounding a central waterfront. Tomlin began the project with a single structure before expanding into distinct neighborhoods across the map over a 12-year period.

His initial construction was a boutique hotel equipped with an executive spa, therapy rooms, glass ceilings for controlled natural lighting, elevator shafts, and retail shops. Other specialized residential areas include an apartment complex featuring individual aquariums installed on every floor, as well as high-rise towers positioned directly across from planned soccer and baseball stadiums. Tomlin noted that he intentionally designed public facilities throughout the city to include gender-separated public restrooms.

Penthouse Features and Digital Inhabitants

To evaluate how movement flowed through his interior floor plans, Tomlin placed non-player character villagers inside his completed buildings. His designs emphasize wide-sightline windows, open-plan living and dining areas, and outdoor rooftop decks.

Among the highlighted locations is a rooftop penthouse bearing a exterior sign reading “Trump Tower.” A text disclaimer attached to the video noted that the structure was built around 2015 and was not intended as a political endorsement, stating that the build predated the results of the 2016 US presidential election.

Background

Mike Tomlin served as head coach of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers for 19 seasons, leading the franchise to a Super Bowl championship and maintaining a streak of zero losing seasons throughout his tenure. Minecraft, released in 2011, is a sandbox game whose creative mode allows players to build structures without resource limits or enemy hazards.
