A car struck a crowd of rugby league supporters in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, leaving at least 10 people injured, including three children. Two victims—a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man—remain in critical condition in hospital following the crash in the suburb of Wallsend. Police arrested an 18-year-old driver at the scene and confirmed the incident is not believed to be terrorism-related.
Details of the Crash
The collision took place as crowd members gathered along the street to cheer on the Newcastle Knights. The local rugby league team was departing for Sydney to play against the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League grand final scheduled for Sunday. Newcastle sits roughly 110 kilometers (68 miles) north of Sydney.
Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after the vehicle struck spectators. Authorities reported that of the 10 individuals hospitalized, eight remain in stable condition alongside the two who are critically injured.
Driver Detained and Investigated
New South Wales Police took the 18-year-old male driver into custody immediately following the crash. He was transported to a medical facility to undergo mandatory alcohol and drug testing. Initial inquiries by law enforcement suggest the event was an accidental loss of vehicle control rather than an intentional act.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris stated in broadcast interviews with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the driver was a rugby supporter participating in the festivities before losing control.
“He was revving the car, he was excited, he was a supporter,” Morris told the ABC, adding that the driver crashed shortly after. “Somehow he lost control of the car … and he’s gone into the crowd.”
Official Responses
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released a statement addressing the crash, describing the event as horrible and offering support to those hurt during the community gathering.
“Rugby league brings people together, and this should have been a weekend of excitement,” Albanese said in a post on X.
Police investigations into the cause of the vehicle’s loss of control remain ongoing.
