Apple Maps Has Ads Now — Here’s What iPhone Users Need to Know
Apple Maps is no longer completely ad-free. Apple has officially begun rolling out advertisements in its Maps app in the United States and Canada, marking a major change for one of Apple’s most widely used services.
The rollout began in late August 2026 and is expected to expand gradually to more users over the following weeks. Apple originally announced the plan in March as part of its new Apple Business platform.
Where Ads Appear in Apple Maps
The new advertisements are designed to appear in two main areas of Apple Maps.
The first is the Suggested Places section, which users can see when they open the search interface before entering a specific query. A promoted business may appear among these recommendations.
The second location is the search results page. When users search for something such as a restaurant, hotel or other local business, a relevant company can pay to appear prominently near the top of the results.
Apple says ads are clearly identified with a blue “Ad” label, allowing users to distinguish sponsored listings from regular search results. Only one ad appears in a set of search results.
Why Is Apple Adding Maps Ads?
The move gives Apple another way to generate revenue from its enormous ecosystem of devices and services.
For businesses, Maps advertising provides a way to reach customers at the moment they are actively looking for a nearby product or service. Apple says companies can create Maps advertisements through Apple Business, while existing Apple Ads customers and agencies can also access additional campaign options through Apple’s advertising platform.
The change also brings Apple Maps closer to competitors such as Google Maps, which has offered promoted business listings for years.
Apple Says Privacy Remains a Priority
Apple is emphasizing that its Maps advertising system is designed differently from traditional targeted advertising.
According to Apple, a user’s location and Maps advertising activity are not associated with their Apple Account. The company also says personal data remains on the user’s device, is not collected or stored by Apple for this advertising system, and is not shared with third parties.
Instead, advertising relevance can be determined using information such as search terms, the approximate location represented by the map view and nearby recommendations.
Apple says the ads are intended to remain relevant without creating a personal advertising profile tied to the user’s identity.
Can You Turn Off Apple Maps Ads?
For users who prefer an entirely ad-free Maps experience, there is currently no setting to disable these Maps advertisements.
The ads are being integrated directly into the search and discovery experience, meaning users in the affected regions will see sponsored listings as the rollout reaches their devices.
That has already generated criticism from some users who viewed Apple Maps as a cleaner alternative to services containing prominent advertisements.
What This Means for Businesses
For local businesses, Apple Maps advertising could become an important new marketing channel.
Restaurants, retailers, hotels and service providers can potentially appear in front of customers who are already searching for relevant businesses nearby. Apple’s new business platform also allows companies to manage their brand information, photos, locations and other details across Apple services.
Businesses must first claim their location on Apple Maps before creating advertisements through Apple Business.
Apple Maps Enters a New Era
The arrival of advertisements represents a significant shift for Apple Maps. The service has historically competed partly on its clean interface and Apple’s strong privacy messaging.
Now, Apple is adding a new source of advertising revenue while attempting to maintain that privacy-focused identity.
For users in the U.S. and Canada, the biggest change is simple: Apple Maps now has sponsored listings. The company says the ads will remain clearly labeled and privacy-conscious, but whether users accept advertising inside a navigation app will become clearer as the rollout expands.
For Apple, meanwhile, Maps could become an increasingly important part of its growing advertising business.
