Chelsea Agree Deal Worth Up to £40m for Atalanta Defender Honest Ahanor

English Premier League club Chelsea has reached an agreement to sign Italian defender Honest Ahanor from Serie A side Atalanta in a transfer valued at up to £40 million. The 18-year-old left-back has received permission from his current club to travel to London to undergo a medical examination, having already finalized personal terms for his proposed move to the Stamford Bridge club.

Chelsea first signaled their interest in securing the teenager during negotiations in July when they signed right-back Marco Palestra from the same Italian club. However, it remains uncertain whether Chelsea intends to integrate the young defender directly into the senior squad for the upcoming campaign under newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso. According to representatives for Ahanor, the player could instead be sent out on an immediate loan spell to another Premier League club following the completion of his transfer.

Ahanor, who primarily operates as a left-back, only joined Atalanta from Genoa during the previous summer transfer window. That previous move involved a reported fee of €16 million, with an additional €4 million structured in add-ons, on a three-year contract. Before Chelsea finalized their recent agreement, English side Brighton had also sought to secure the defender’s services earlier in the summer, but Atalanta rejected a £29 million offer, equivalent to €34 million, from the South Coast club.

In his single campaign with Atalanta, Ahanor secured a regular spot in the starting lineup, making 28 appearances in Serie A. His performances during the domestic season were accompanied by his debut in European competition, where he featured in a 2-1 Champions League victory against Belgian side Club Brugge in September. His progression at club level led to an international call-up for the Italian national team in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece.

The move for Ahanor represents another addition to Chelsea’s squad rebuilding process since Alonso took charge as manager in July. Since his arrival, the club has committed significant funds to reinforce its squad, including a club-record £117 million transfer for England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as well as the additions of experienced Premier League players Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. Chelsea began their domestic league campaign on Monday with a 3-2 victory against Fulham and are set to face Brighton at home in their upcoming match on Sunday.
