Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89 as Crown Passes to King Haakon VIII

Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, has died in Oslo at the age of 89. His 53-year-old son immediately succeeded him as head of state, taking the regnal name King Haakon VIII. The new monarch formally notified the Norwegian government of his father’s death on Friday morning following a rapid decline in the former king’s health.

Following the announcement, a period of national mourning was established across the country. Citizens gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo to leave flowers and messages, while flags were lowered to half-mast and church bells rang out at noon. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre remarked that “a whole nation is in mourning” and expressed appreciation for the late monarch’s long period of public service.

Addressing the cabinet during an extraordinary council of state, King Haakon VIII thanked the government and public for their support. He selected as his official motto “Everything for Norway.” The new king is scheduled to take an oath of accession before parliament in the coming days. Formal coronations were abolished in Norway over a century ago, though the king may elect to hold a consecration ceremony to bless his reign.

Harald had been receiving care at Oslo’s University hospital for haemolytic anaemia, a disorder characterized by the rapid destruction of red blood cells. Royal officials had reported on Thursday that his health was in an extremely serious state. Despite enduring previous medical issues, including an operation for bladder cancer in 2003 and a pacemaker insertion in 2024, Harald had consistently ruled out abdication, citing his lifelong oath to parliament.

Monarchs and leaders across Europe offered condolences. King Charles III of Great Britain described his late cousin as a “towering figure” who governed with humility. Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf wished success to his godson Haakon, while messages of sympathy were also delivered by foreign leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. A great-great-grandchild of Britain’s Queen Victoria, he was educated at Oxford University and competed for Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games. During his reign, he was credited with modernizing the royal court and crown estates, and he married a commoner, Sonja, in 1968.

The royal succession takes place during a period of diminished public approval for the Norwegian monarchy, which dropped to 54 percent in a February poll from 72 percent in 2024. The royal household has been impacted by scandals involving Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of King Haakon VIII. US documents released in January revealed extensive correspondence between Mette-Marit and the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014. The revelations prompted public criticism from Prime Minister Støre and a formal apology from the crown princess.

Additionally, Mette-Marit’s 29-year-old son from a prior relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced in June to four years in prison following convictions for two rapes and 32 other offenses. Høiby has appealed the court’s decision. Recent surveys indicated that nearly half of respondents believed Mette-Marit should not become queen.
