The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has dismissed its athletic director, Martin Jarmond, following years of mounting financial deficits within the university’s sports division. UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk announced the decision in a statement to the university community, explaining that the athletics department “currently carries a significant financial deficit, and its current path is not sustainable.”

Jarmond, 46, took charge of the department in 2020 after leaving Boston College. Despite receiving a five-year contract extension in May 2024, his administration was strained by ongoing fiscal difficulties. Over seven consecutive fiscal years, the athletic department accumulated a total deficit of $241 million. Although the annual financial deficit was reduced to $21.6 million for the 2025 fiscal year, the university repeatedly stepped in to provide financial bailouts to maintain athletic operations.

To guide the division through its transition, UCLA appointed Tim Harris as interim chief executive officer and athletic director. Harris, who previously spent years as president of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, will serve in the position on a pro bono basis. According to Frenk, Harris will be tasked with creating a strategy to increase revenues through corporate partnerships, commercial licensing, and alternative business ventures.

Jarmond’s departure comes with $6.5 million remaining on his agreement, comprising $5.9 million in base pay alongside a retention bonus. Despite financial struggles, UCLA experienced notable on-field success during Jarmond’s leadership, including three national NCAA championship titles in the previous academic year. Frenk expressed gratitude for Jarmond’s “extraordinary service to UCLA” throughout his period leading the program.

Jarmond’s tenure included significant turnover within the university’s high-profile football program. He oversaw the 2024 departure of head coach Chip Kelly and subsequently appointed former player DeShaun Foster. Foster was dismissed after compiling a 5-10 record, which included an unvictorious start to his final season. Jarmond later led a search committee consisting of prominent alumni and sports executives, resulting in the December appointment of head coach Bob Chesney from James Madison University.

Jarmond also helped navigate major structural changes for UCLA athletics, including the university’s transition out of the Pac-12 conference. In August 2024, UCLA joined the Big Ten conference alongside cross-town rival the University of Southern California. While the change secured millions in additional broadcasting rights revenue, it also heightened operational costs due to increased national travel requirements for teams.

Background

In United States higher education, athletic directors oversee multi-million-dollar budgets, coaching staff hires, and commercial operations for university sports teams. Unlike professional sports leagues worldwide, American college athletics are integrated into academic institutions, generating revenue through television contracts, ticket sales, and corporate sponsorships while funding non-revenue student sports.

In recent years, major U.S. universities have reorganized into nationwide media-focused conferences to maximize broadcasting revenue. UCLA’s move to the Big Ten conference shifted the university from a West Coast regional league into a coast-to-coast conference, significantly altering the financial and logistical landscape for its athletic programs.
