British right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been deported from the United States following his arrest by federal law enforcement at an airport in Louisiana, according to statements from US officials and Yiannopoulos himself.
Federal agents apprehended the 41-year-old upon his arrival at New Orleans airport before transferring him to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan, Yiannopoulos described his experience in detention as humiliating and frightening. He recounted being placed in hand and leg shackles, criticizing US immigration authorities for subjecting standard detainees to severe physical restraints during custody.
The legal basis for the deportation remains a point of contention between Yiannopoulos and American authorities. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, Yiannopoulos entered the country legally in May 2019 but later overstayed his visa terms. White House border official Tom Homan told CNN that a federal immigration judge issued a deportation order in July after Yiannopoulos failed to attend a mandatory court hearing. Homan stated that federal officers carried out the expulsion once the order was finalized.
Yiannopoulos disputed the official narrative, claiming that government agencies deliberately mailed hearing notices to an outdated address to ensure he would miss the court date. He asserted that after marrying an American citizen in 2017, he had applied to adjust his legal status to obtain permanent residency. Yiannopoulos claimed that authorities cancelled his green card without justification and orchestrated his arrest to make an example of him. He pledged to challenge what he called an unlawful removal in court.
In the interview, Yiannopoulos expressed regret for his earlier political positions, stating he was “ashamed” to have supported US President Donald Trump. He also questioned official assertions that deportation raids target dangerous criminals, noting that people without criminal backgrounds are routinely caught up in government sweeps.
The deportation follows public conflict within conservative circles. Political activist Laura Loomer stated on social media that she reported Yiannopoulos to ICE and the FBI for being in the country illegally. When asked about her comments, Yiannopoulos dismissed Loomer’s claims regarding her role in his removal and questioned her mental health.
