Premier League clubs concluded their summer transfer activity as reigning champions Arsenal added key recruits to build on their first title in 22 years, while chief contenders Manchester City and Chelsea underwent major squad overhauls under new management.
Arsenal completed their incoming business early in the window, adding midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million, defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, and winger Christos Tzolis. The club attempted to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, but the move collapsed after Atletico blocked his preferred transfer to Barcelona. Arsenal opened their title defense with victories over Coventry City and Aston Villa, alongside a victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Manchester City experienced extensive squad changes following the departure of Pep Guardiola after 10 years in charge. Under new manager Enzo Maresca, City set a Premier League record by spending £458 million in a single transfer window, topping Liverpool’s previous mark of £415 million set the previous summer. The expenditure included a joint British transfer record fee of £125 million to sign midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, as well as £116 million for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, £85.6 million for 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, £65 million for Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, and Allan Elias from Palmeiras. City offset part of this outlay by generating approximately £300 million in player sales, with departures including Rodri, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Jack Grealish, Nathan Ake, and several others.
Chelsea also reconfigured their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso. Despite selling Fernandez to Manchester City, Chelsea signed forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, defender Maxence Lacroix, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa after Robert Sanchez was loaned to Italian side Como. Chelsea also added veteran players Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. A proposed £47.1 million move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara collapsed late in the window when Monaco withdrew from the deal. Chelsea started their league campaign with two consecutive wins and will operate without European competition this season.
Liverpool replaced former manager Arne Slot with Andoni Iraola. The club’s major acquisition was the £123 million signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
