The United Nations has warned that an unfolding El Niño event could become the strongest recorded in more than 70 years, threatening to disrupt global weather patterns and cause severe economic damage through early 2027. According to data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), rapidly warming waters in the Pacific Ocean are driving extreme heat, droughts, and severe storms across multiple regions.

Unprecedented Pacific Ocean Warming

Data published by the WMO shows that sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific have recently exceeded 2 degrees Celsius above long-term averages. Monthly surface temperatures are projected to reach nearly 4 degrees Celsius above normal, potentially making this the strongest El Niño since at least 1950. Subsurface ocean temperatures in parts of the Pacific are currently recorded at more than 8 degrees Celsius above average.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up.” WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that the event “has the potential to deliver a massive blow” to communities globally. Forecasters noted that the heat released by El Niño will combine with baseline temperature increases caused by human-induced climate change.

Drought, Wildfires, and Canal Restrictions

The climate pattern is expected to significantly reduce rainfall across Southeast Asia, Central America, and northern South America over the coming months. In Panama, authorities announced that daily vessel transits through the Panama Canal will be reduced by more than 10% due to anticipated water shortages. The canal handles about 14,000 ships annually and generates approximately $3 billion in annual revenue.

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is attempting to suppress wildfires that have already burned over 107,000 hectares during an extended dry season. Indonesian authorities have deployed cloud-seeding aircraft to trigger rain, promised additional firefighting resources, and arrested dozens of people accused of illegally clearing land with fire. Local residents in Central Kalimantan reported thick, stinging smoke lingering over communities for more than a month.

Typhoons and Marine Disruption

In East Asia, Chinese weather experts attribute an unusually intense storm season to the developing super El Niño. China is expecting seven typhoons to make landfall this year. Earlier in the season, July typhoons Bavi, Noul, and Maysak caused dozens of deaths, while Typhoon Dolphin forced the evacuation of more than one million people in August.

In the Southern Hemisphere, Australian scientists are monitoring intense ocean heat. Dr. Alistair Hobday, chief researcher at Australia’s national science agency, indicated that while the Great Barrier Reef may avoid severe impact this season, waters off southern Australia face heightened marine heatwaves. This comes alongside existing regional ecological strains, including toxic algal blooms and avian influenza. Australian authorities have established early warning systems to coordinate financial relief for fisheries and facilitate species relocation.

While El Niño cycles occur naturally every few years, global climate change raises background ocean temperatures, increasing the likelihood that these natural events produce unprecedented weather extremes.
