A new generation of basketball players will represent the United States at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, targeting a fifth consecutive title with one of the youngest American rosters in decades. The 10-day tournament sees Team USA seeking its 12th gold medal overall while integrating several players making their senior international tournament debuts.

Youthful Roster Takes the Court

The 12-player American squad features six players under the age of 25, tying the highest number on a US World Cup or Olympic roster since 1994. Additionally, seven players—including Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Aliyah Boston, Angel Reese, Kiki Iriafen, and Sonia Citron—are making their debuts for the senior national team in a major five-on-five international event. Rhyne Howard, aged 26, is also among the seven first-time senior participants.

Several members of the current roster previously played together in youth international competitions, winning gold at events such as the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup. Reflecting on their progression from junior development to the national team, Clark described reaching the senior level alongside her long-time teammates as “kind of like a pinch me moment.”

Last-Minute Lineup Changes

The team’s youth focus expanded further following announcements that veteran national team members A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum would not compete in Berlin because of health reasons. Their absences prompted USA Basketball to add Iriafen and Citron to the roster.

While players like Clark, Bueckers, and Boston progressed through standard youth national ranks, others took different paths to the senior team. Howard previously participated in Olympic qualifying and 3×3 basketball, while Reese debuted with USA Basketball at the 2023 AmeriCup after earlier national team trials. Iriafen joined national team activities during a training camp in December.

Evolving Global Competition

The United States has maintained strong dominance in women’s basketball, suffering only a single loss at either the World Cup or the Olympics since 1994. However, recent international contests have demonstrated narrowing margins, including a narrow one-point win against host nation France in the gold medal game at the Paris Olympics.

Addressing the rising quality of international opponents, US head coach Kara Lawson noted the challenge facing the squad. “There’s no question that the world is improving at a rapid rate,” Lawson said, adding that the trend will make the tournament significantly harder to win.

Background

USA Basketball has historically dominated international women’s 5-on-5 basketball, securing 11 FIBA World Cup gold medals prior to the Berlin tournament. Junior national team programs, including U16, U17, and U19 rosters, serve as the primary pipeline for identifying and developing elite American talent before players transition to professional play in the WNBA and senior international competition.
