The Miami Hurricanes opened their season on Friday night with a 45-6 victory over the Stanford Cardinal in Stanford, California, driven by record-breaking performances from sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney and transfer quarterback Darian Mensah. The pair built a decisive early lead before both players were rested in the third quarter.
Historic Receiving Performance
Toney caught 12 passes for 234 receiving yards, setting a single-game record for the Miami football program. The performance broke the previous mark of 220 yards set by Eddie Brown in 1984. Toney also tied the university’s single-game record by catching three touchdown passes. The majority of his yardage came in the first half, with two catches recorded after halftime, including a 47-yard touchdown score.
“It means a lot, knowing how many greats played at this university,” Toney said after the game.
Mensah Sets Program Debut Marks
Mensah made his debut as Miami’s starting quarterback after transferring from Duke University. He completed 27 of 30 pass attempts for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns, setting Miami program records for passing yards and touchdown passes in a debut appearance.
The combination established control early, connecting on a 48-yard pass on Miami’s first play from scrimmage. Mensah’s five touchdown passes surpassed the single-game high achieved by previous Miami starter Carson Beck last season.
“His skill set really fits what we do,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “His ability to read the field and his ability to digest concepts and to continue to evolve is really, really impressive.”
Offensive Support and Fan Travel
Wide receiver Cooper Barkate, who also transferred to Miami from Duke, recorded four receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown.
After the game, Toney thanked the Miami fans who made the six-hour journey across the country to attend the season opener in California.

Mensah transferred to Miami after leading Duke to an Atlantic Coast Conference title, where he threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns last season.
