Space Advocates Urge Isle of Man Candidates to Support International Space Treaty

The Isle of Man chapter of the Mars Society has written to candidates standing in the island’s general election, urging them to support joining the Artemis Accords, an international framework governing space exploration.
The advocacy group argues that endorsing the agreement would raise the island’s global profile and support local technical industries without incurring financial costs or binding legal obligations.
The Artemis Accords Framework
Launched by NASA in 2020, the Artemis Accords establish guidelines intended to foster peaceful and transparent space exploration. More than 70 countries have signed the framework, including the United Kingdom, which joined as a founding member.
The accords are non-binding and require no membership fees, financial contributions, or parliamentary ratification. Stuart Mullan, leader of the local Mars Society chapter, characterized the agreement as a “low-risk, high-visibility way” to demonstrate political ambition in space-related sectors.
Mullan stated that joining the framework aligns with existing local principles and could strengthen efforts to establish science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects on the island.
Current Space Industry Presence
While the proposal does not involve launching space vehicles from the island, the Isle of Man already maintains an active role in the commercial space sector. Its Space Registry processes satellite filings for several major satellite operators, including SES, Inmarsat, Avanti, and Telesat. In addition, SpaceX operates a satellite ground station on the island.
Mullan noted that the international space industry relies on professional infrastructure similar to what the Isle of Man already provides for maritime and aviation sectors, such as insurance, legal services, tax expertise, finance, and regulatory oversight. He urged election candidates to promote the jurisdiction as an attractive destination for technical companies capable of bringing skilled employment to the island.

The Artemis Accords are an international effort aimed at establishing practical norms for civilian space activity and resource utilization. The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea. Its economy relies heavily on professional and financial services, and it has previously expanded its regulatory and registry frameworks to cover specialized sectors, including shipping, commercial aviation, and satellite operations.
