Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the fourth round of the US Open on Friday with a straightforward victory over Wu Yibing. Speaking after the match, the 23-year-old revealed plans to take longer breaks during future tennis seasons to preserve his mental health and maintain peak performance for major tournaments.
Strong Return After Four-Month Layoff
Alcaraz returned to competition in New York after being sidelined since April with a right wrist injury that forced his withdrawal during the Barcelona Open. In his third-round match on Friday, Alcaraz defeated Wu 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, setting up a fourth-round meeting with Tommy Paul.
Following the match, Alcaraz said his physical recovery had exceeded his expectations and reported no physical setbacks. He noted that he was surprised by how quickly he felt comfortable competing at a high level despite the four-month absence.
Prioritizing Mental Health Over Tournament Volume
Although Alcaraz clarified that his wrist injury was not caused by overplaying, he stated that future extended breaks would be aimed at protecting his mental well-being. He expressed concern over the relentless nature of the tour schedule, noting that back-to-back tournaments leave players feeling inadequately prepared for high-stakes events like Grand Slams and Masters 1000 tournaments.
Alcaraz acknowledged that, unlike many players on tour, he does not face financial or ranking pressure that would prevent him from skipping events. He explained that taking deliberate breaks would allow him to return to the sport with renewed energy, stating that he wants to “step on the court, have joy, have fun on the court” rather than feeling fatigued by a long season.
Match Record and Style Adjustments
Prior to his injury, Alcaraz had compiled a 71-9 match record this year, a stretch that included winning a major title at the Australian Open. During the previous season, he competed in 80 matches across all competitions.
Alongside his fourth-round advance, Alcaraz debuted a slight wardrobe adjustment on Friday, wearing a white shirt underneath his sleeveless top to prevent the outer shirt from shifting excessively. He also introduced a new post-match celebration imitating the shooting of an arrow.
Background
The length and intensity of the professional tennis calendar have long been a topic of debate among players, with many citing physical fatigue and minimal off-season rest as major challenges. As one of the top players in men’s tennis, Alcaraz’s decision to deliberately schedule extended breaks underscores a growing focus on workload management to sustain long-term performance.
