Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has asked for patience as he integrates 10 summer signings following a goal-free start to the English Premier League season. Villa failed to score in their opening three domestic matches, registering just a single shot on target. The club now prepares to open its Champions League campaign against Belgian side Club Brugge on Tuesday.
The slow start follows substantial personnel changes at Villa Park over the summer transfer window. Six players who started in Villa’s Europa League final victory in Istanbul have departed. Forward Ollie Watkins left for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in a £51 million transfer after scoring a club-record 91 Premier League goals. Midfielder Morgan Rogers was sold to Chelsea for £117 million, while Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans also departed. Watkins and Rogers combined for 46 percent of Villa’s league goals last season.
Attacking Replacements and Player Statistics
To rebuild the attack, Villa completed the £65 million record signing of striker Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. Jackson previously worked under Emery at Spanish side Villarreal and spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he scored eight goals in 1,004 Bundesliga minutes with a 21.1 percent conversion rate. During his previous Premier League seasons with Chelsea, Jackson scored 14 goals in 2023–24 and 10 goals in 2024–25.
Additional offensive additions include 18-year-old winger Ibrahim Mbaye, who signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £47 million on transfer deadline day, and winger Alejandro Garnacho, who joined on loan from Chelsea. Mbaye contributed four assists in 10 starts during PSG’s Ligue 1 championship campaign. Forward Johan Manzambi arrived from German club Freiburg but has yet to play due to a knee injury sustained after appearing in the summer World Cup.
Integration Process and Squad Integration
Emery’s tactical setup places heavy demands on incoming players, with team video and tactical meetings lasting between 90 minutes and two hours. In Villa’s recent 0-0 draw against Hull City, only two summer arrivals—Jackson and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki—were named in the starting lineup, while defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis was excluded from the matchday squad.
Nineteen-year-old academy product George Hemmings has started ahead of Garnacho in early matches. Prior to this season, Hemmings had played 25 minutes of top-flight football. Emery publicly praised the teenager, describing him as “clearly a Premier League player.”
Looking Ahead
Villa experienced a similar scoring delay last season, taking five matches to record their first Premier League goal before ultimately winning European silverware. Emery emphasized that rebuilding team chemistry with new players requires time before results follow.
“We must be patient, and we should understand that we are rebuilding the team,” Emery said. He added that the team is focused on competing in Belgium on Tuesday before returning to domestic league play against Nottingham Forest.
