Cultural Inspiration The Filipino value of bayanihan (communal unity) and traditional banig weaving

American basketball star Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves completed a two-day visit to the Philippines, highlighted by the introduction of a custom two-shoe footwear pack designed by Filipino artist Melvin Rodas. The collection was created to reflect local basketball culture and traditional values through specific structural design choices.

The collection features two connected footwear models rather than standalone colorways: the blue Anthony Edwards 2, named “Magpakitang Gilas,” and the red Believe That. 1, titled “Tibay Ng Lahi.” The blue Magpakitang Gilas model was produced exclusively for distribution within the Philippine market, while both pairs together form a singular story intended to resonate with domestic fans and the broader Filipino diaspora.

Rodas explained that his primary objective was to avoid simply applying national flag colors to the shoes. Instead, he centered the concept on “bayanihan,” a core Filipino value emphasizing community unity, cooperation, and mutual support. In the Philippines, basketball is deeply ingrained as a collective experience, played in neighborhood barangay courts, watched in family homes, and followed in workplaces and schools. Rodas noted that basketball serves as a unifying force, stating, “Basketball is our home court,” and observing that overseas community members feel a sense of home when gathering in crowds.

To translate the abstract concept of bayanihan into a physical design, Rodas utilized the motif of the “banig,” a traditional hand-woven mat constructed from dried plant leaves, such as coconut leaves. While individual dried leaf strands are thin and fragile, weaving them together creates a durable material capable of serving as flooring or wall structures. Rodas used this material property as a metaphor for communal strength.

The visual execution links the two footwear models structurally. The lateral side of the blue Magpakitang Gilas features a woven banig pattern intended to symbolize structural walls. Meanwhile, the interior of the red Tibay Ng Lahi incorporates the banig design onto its insole to represent the floor. Rodas stated that he wanted the visual presentation to “scream Filipino” and encourage observers to reflect on why Filipinos compete and demonstrate their capability on a global stage.

Edwards’ arrival in the country generated widespread attention, with crowds and media following the NBA guard throughout his brief tour. Basketball holds a prominent place in daily life across the Philippines, where visits by high-profile international players regularly draw significant public excitement.

Background

Basketball is widely considered the most popular sport in the Philippines, maintaining deep cultural roots dating back to the early 20th century. Anthony Edwards was selected first overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and has developed into one of the league’s leading young guards.
