Amazon Is Expanding Drone Deliveries Fast, but Some Packages Are Ending Up in Pools

Amazon is rapidly expanding its futuristic drone-delivery service across the United States, but a series of unusual delivery mishaps is highlighting the challenges of getting autonomous aircraft to reliably drop packages at customers’ homes.

Prime Air drones have reportedly dropped packages into swimming pools and ponds in several incidents, including a recent viral video showing a delivery package falling directly into a backyard pool in Texas. Similar cases have been reported elsewhere, raising questions about how autonomous drones handle water and other difficult drop-off environments.

The incidents come at an awkward time for Amazon.

The company announced this week that it plans to expand Prime Air to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, a huge increase from its current network of 11 operational hubs.

When a high-tech delivery goes wrong

Amazon’s MK30 delivery drones are designed to fly autonomously to a customer’s property, identify an appropriate delivery location and lower the package to the ground.

But some recent deliveries have gone badly.

In one widely shared video, a drone appears to release a package over a swimming pool, sending the parcel into the water.

Other reports have described packages ending up in ponds or being damaged during delivery. The incidents appear to be relatively uncommon, but they are particularly noticeable because drone delivery is marketed as a highly automated and precise alternative to conventional delivery.

The problem isn’t necessarily that the drone cannot recognize a pool. Autonomous delivery involves a complicated combination of mapping, cameras, sensors, GPS and real-time environmental assessment.

Wind, unusual property layouts and the effects of the drone’s own propellers can make the final few seconds of a delivery particularly difficult.

Amazon says safety comes first

Amazon says Prime Air drones are designed with multiple layers of safety technology.

The MK30 uses cameras and sensors to identify obstacles and can adjust its flight path when unexpected objects appear. Amazon says the aircraft is designed with redundant flight-critical systems so that a single failure should not cause a loss of control.

The company also says its drones assess the area around a delivery point before releasing a package.

Amazon has previously said that its delivery system is designed to avoid people, pets and vehicles when selecting a drop zone.

Water, however, presents a different challenge.

A swimming pool or pond may appear to be an open and unobstructed area from above, but it is obviously not a suitable place to leave a package.

The timing is significant

The water-delivery incidents are attracting attention because Amazon is preparing for its biggest Prime Air expansion yet.

The company says the service could reach approximately 500 cities and towns in the U.S. by the end of this year. The expansion will include markets such as Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, Syracuse and Boise.

Amazon’s goal is to make drone delivery a normal part of its logistics network rather than a small experimental service.

The company says its drones can deliver eligible packages weighing up to five pounds in less than an hour, with some deliveries designed to arrive in around 30 minutes.

That makes reliable drop-off technology increasingly important.

A system that works well in a controlled suburban environment must eventually cope with thousands of different properties, landscaping styles, weather conditions and obstacles.

Amazon wants hundreds of millions of drone deliveries

Amazon is thinking well beyond the current rollout.

CEO Andy Jassy has said the company expects Prime Air to eventually serve around 30 million customers and aims to deliver 500 million packages per year by the end of the decade.

That would transform drones from an experimental delivery method into a significant part of Amazon’s logistics operation.

But scaling the technology also means dealing with the unusual situations that human delivery drivers encounter every day.

A human driver can see a swimming pool, driveway, garden furniture or muddy patch and make an immediate judgment about where to leave a parcel.

An autonomous drone has to make that decision using software, sensors and predefined safety rules.

Water isn’t the only challenge

Prime Air has faced other difficulties during its development.

The company has had to deal with regulatory approvals, community concerns about noise and privacy, weather limitations and previous accidents involving drones and infrastructure.

Amazon says its latest MK30 aircraft is quieter and more advanced than earlier designs.

The company also says the drones normally fly at higher altitudes and that noise at ground level is limited.

Nevertheless, local communities have sometimes questioned whether drone delivery is appropriate for residential neighborhoods.

The more widespread the service becomes, the more frequently those questions are likely to arise.

Could Amazon prevent packages from landing in water?

The obvious technical question is whether Amazon can teach its delivery system to treat pools and ponds as prohibited drop zones.

The company has not publicly suggested that water is a widespread problem with Prime Air. Amazon has described incidents like the reported water deliveries as extremely rare and said it is taking steps to prevent similar problems in the future.

The technology could potentially improve through better mapping, image recognition and additional safeguards around properties containing water.

That would become increasingly important as Prime Air expands into more neighborhoods.

The bigger test for drone delivery

A package falling into a swimming pool may sound like an amusing technology failure, but the underlying issue is much more serious.

Amazon is betting that autonomous drones can become a dependable part of its delivery infrastructure.

To achieve that, the system has to do more than fly safely.

It has to consistently understand the environment below it and determine exactly where a package can be released without damaging the product or creating a hazard.

At the moment, Amazon appears confident that its technology is ready for a much larger rollout.

The next few years will show whether Prime Air can move from an impressive demonstration of autonomous flight to a truly dependable everyday delivery service.

For now, the image of an Amazon package dropping into a backyard pool serves as a reminder that even the most advanced delivery technology can still struggle with one deceptively simple question:
