| Counter-Attacks | Russia claimed to have downed 726 Ukrainian drones, following recent Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russian territory. |
Overnight Russian missile strikes targeted the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv around midnight local time, killing at least 15 people, according to the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. Earlier reporting cited at least 13 dead in the capital, but local officials later reported a higher casualty figure as emergency crews searched damaged locations.
The attack struck residential apartment blocks, warehouses, a school, and a children’s hospital across Kyiv. In the city’s Solomyanski district, blasts destroyed a laundry and boiler facility that supplied heating to surrounding residential buildings, while knocking out windows at a local school. The bombardment also severed power lines, leaving thousands of homes without electricity across the region.
In the wider Kyiv region, an attack on the Brovary and Boryspil districts left one person dead and seven injured, according to local authorities. In the eastern region of Donetsk, a local official reported that one person was killed and 11 others were wounded in separate strikes.
Russia’s defence ministry stated that its forces used air, land, and sea-based weapons to hit military facilities and warehouses. However, Ukraine’s deputy intelligence chief told reporters that Russia was carrying out planned strikes on energy and municipal infrastructure ahead of winter to disrupt civilian life.
The attack highlighted a growing shortage of Ukrainian air defenses. A morning update from the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that none of the Russian ballistic missiles fired overnight were intercepted. Ukraine relies on American-made Patriot systems to intercept ballistic missiles, but US stockpiles have been reduced following military operations involving Iran.
Standing outside a damaged apartment building, Klitschko appealed to Western allies, stating Ukraine needed "ammunition, anti-missile systems – we need support from our partners". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that "as long as Ukraine does not have enough anti-ballistics, Russia will not seriously think about peace", adding that Patriot interceptors are required daily.
Meanwhile, Russian defence officials claimed that 726 Ukrainian drones were shot down over various Russian regions overnight. Ukraine has intensified strikes inside Russia recently, including launching 600 drones toward Moscow over the weekend. Russian officials stated that two separate attacks inside Russia this week killed at least 16 people, including one child.
Background
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, primarily in the eastern border regions. Both nations have escalated long-range aerial attacks in recent weeks, with each side accusing the other of targeting civilian infrastructure. Diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have made little progress.
