Denver Broncos
The Broncos were there at the start, and for a long time that was the kindest thing anyone could say about them. Denver joined the American Football League as one of its eight charter members in 1960 and spent the decade as its least successful franchise, dressed in mustard-brown uniforms with vertically striped socks so widely mocked that the team publicly burned them in 1962. There was no winning season until 1973. What the franchise did have was a city that turned up anyway — Denver sold out through the losing years and has essentially never stopped.
The first real team arrived in 1977. The Orange Crush defence, built around Randy Gradishar and Lyle Alzado, carried Denver to Super Bowl XII, where Dallas won comfortably. It established a pattern that would define the next twenty years: get there, lose.
In 1983 the Broncos acquired John Elway, who had been drafted first overall by Baltimore and refused to play for them. He would spend sixteen seasons in Denver and become the most important figure in the club’s history. The 1980s teams reached three Super Bowls and lost all three, two of them badly — 39-20 to the Giants, 42-10 to Washington, then 55-10 to San Francisco, still the most lopsided result in the game’s history. Elway’s reputation in that era rested less on the finals than on how he got to them, above all The Drive: 98 yards in the closing minutes of the January 1987 AFC Championship at Cleveland, a possession that Denver fans and Browns fans remember with equal intensity for opposite reasons.
Redemption took until Mike Shanahan arrived in 1995 and paired Elway with Terrell Davis. The 1997 team, a wild card, beat Green Bay 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII — the first championship in franchise history and the AFC’s first in more than a decade. They repeated the following season, beating Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII, and Elway retired immediately afterwards as the game’s MVP. Few careers have ended better.
The next stretch produced good teams without titles until Peyton Manning signed in 2012. His 2013 offence set a scoring record and reached Super Bowl XLVIII, where Seattle dismantled it 43-8. Two years later the balance inverted entirely: the 2015 Broncos won Super Bowl 50 on the strength of a historically dominant defence, with Von Miller taking MVP honours as Denver beat Carolina 24-10. Manning retired days later, the only quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two franchises.
Then came the longest playoff drought the club has known — nearly a decade without a postseason appearance, working through a succession of quarterbacks that never settled. Pat Bowlen, who had owned the team since 1984 and overseen every one of its championships, died in 2019; the Walton-Penner group bought the franchise in 2022 for a record sum. Sean Payton was hired as head coach in 2023 and drafted Bo Nix the following year, ending the quarterback search that had defined the interim.
The current side is built around that defence again. Pat Surtain II is the best cornerback in the league and won Defensive Player of the Year, with Zach Allen and Nik Bonitto generating pressure in front of him.
Home is Empower Field at Mile High, opened in 2001 on the site of the old stadium, at 5,280 feet above sea level — an altitude visiting teams have complained about for six decades and Denver has never apologised for. The rivalries are the AFL’s originals: Oakland and Las Vegas, Kansas City, the Chargers. Eight Super Bowl appearances, three titles, and a fanbase that earned every one of them the hard way.
