Las Vegas Raiders
Las Vegas Raiders: History, Championships, Players and Latest Team Information
The Las Vegas Raiders are one of the NFL’s most recognizable franchises, known for their passionate fan base, iconic Silver and Black identity, and championship history. The franchise currently competes in the AFC West alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. After spending much of its history in Oakland and a period in Los Angeles, the Raiders relocated to Las Vegas in 2020 and now play their home games at Allegiant Stadium.
Las Vegas Raiders History
The Raiders were founded in 1960 as a member of the American Football League. The franchise quickly developed a distinctive identity built around aggressive football and the philosophy of longtime owner Al Davis.
Oakland became a major NFL power during the 1970s under head coach John Madden. The 1976 Raiders finished the regular season 13-1 and won two playoff games before defeating the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Super Bowl XI. The victory delivered the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship. The Raiders are celebrating the 50th anniversary of that championship throughout the 2026 season.
The Raiders won their second Super Bowl following the 1980 season. Led by quarterback Jim Plunkett, Oakland became the first wild-card team to win the Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 in Super Bowl XV.
The franchise captured its third championship after the 1983 season. Playing as the Los Angeles Raiders, the team dominated Washington 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII, with running back Marcus Allen delivering an MVP performance.
Overall, the Raiders have won three Super Bowl championships and remain one of the NFL’s most successful franchises of the Super Bowl era.
Raiders Legends and All-Time Greats
The Raiders have featured generations of NFL stars, including Jim Otto, Ken Stabler, Fred Biletnikoff, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Marcus Allen, Howie Long, Tim Brown, Charles Woodson and Rich Gannon.
The franchise’s legendary quarterbacks include Stabler and Plunkett, while Marcus Allen became one of the most celebrated running backs in NFL history. Defensive stars such as Howie Long and Charles Woodson helped establish the Raiders’ reputation for physical, aggressive defense.
The team’s history also remains closely connected to Al Davis, whose “Commitment to Excellence” philosophy became synonymous with the organization.
Las Vegas Raiders Today
The Raiders enter the 2026 NFL season under head coach Klint Kubiak, with general manager John Spytek overseeing a major roster-building effort. The organization is attempting to establish a younger and more competitive team around several important veterans and emerging players.
One of the biggest storylines is the quarterback competition between veteran Kirk Cousins and rookie Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Head coach Kubiak had not named a definitive starter heading into the final preseason game, keeping the competition open.
The Raiders also selected running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round of the 2025 draft. Jeanty had a strong rookie season with 975 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns, but an apparent right-leg injury during training camp became a major concern ahead of the 2026 season.
Las Vegas enters the final stage of preseason after defeating Houston 22-20 in a dramatic comeback. Aidan O’Connell led the game-winning drive, while Mendoza experienced an uneven outing that included a pick-six.
The Raiders’ final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers took place at Allegiant Stadium on August 27, with roster decisions becoming increasingly important ahead of the NFL’s final cutdown.
