Los Angeles Rams
History
No franchise in American football has moved as often, or as consequentially, as the Rams. They began in Cleveland in 1936, won an NFL championship there in 1945, and immediately left for Los Angeles — the first major professional team on the West Coast, a relocation that opened the entire western United States to the sport. They also integrated the modern NFL: in 1946, signing Kenny Washington and Woody Strode, breaking a colour line the league had maintained since the 1930s.
The Los Angeles years produced the 1951 title, then decades of teams that were compelling without being champions. The Fearsome Foursome of the 1960s — Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy, Rosey Grier — remains the benchmark by which defensive lines are measured, and Jones is credited with coining the term “sack.” The 1979 team reached Super Bowl XIV and lost to Pittsburgh. Eric Dickerson ran for 2,105 yards in 1984, a single-season record that still stands.
In 1995 the club moved again, to St. Louis, and there found the strangest and most joyful era in its history. The 1999 team started an undrafted former grocery-store shelf-stocker at quarterback after an injury in preseason. Kurt Warner threw for over 4,300 yards and won MVP, Marshall Faulk did everything, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt ran past everyone, and the offence was nicknamed The Greatest Show on Turf. They beat Tennessee in Super Bowl XXXIV, the game ending with a tackle a yard short of the goal line. Two years later they returned and lost to New England in the upset that launched the Patriots dynasty.
The St. Louis period ended badly, in lean seasons and litigation, and in 2016 the team returned to Los Angeles. Sean McVay was hired the following year at thirty, the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, and the turnaround was immediate. His teams have been defined by aggressive roster-building — trading future draft capital for proven players, a strategy the league watched sceptically and then copied.
Super Bowl LIII, in February 2019, was a defeat to New England in the lowest-scoring final ever played. Three years later, after trading for Matthew Stafford, the Rams won Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium — beating Cincinnati 23-20 on their own home field, the second team ever to do so. Aaron Donald, the best defensive player of his generation, made the stop that ended it. Cooper Kupp, that season’s receiving triple crown winner, was named MVP.
Since then the club has rebuilt around younger talent without tearing anything down. Puka Nacua arrived as a fifth-round pick and produced one of the great rookie receiving seasons. Kyren Williams took over the run game. Stafford has kept playing at a high level into his late thirties.
Home is SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, opened in 2020, shared with the Chargers, and among the most expensive venues ever constructed. It hosted Super Bowl LVI and will host Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. The rivalry with San Francisco is one of the NFL’s oldest continuous fixtures, dating to 1950; Seattle and Arizona complete a division the Rams have contested since its formation.
Three championships across three cities, in 1945, 1951 and 2021, plus the 1999 title — a record no other franchise can quite claim, because no other franchise has lived in quite so many places.
