New Orleans Saints History
The NFL awarded New Orleans its franchise on November 1, 1966, appropriately on All Saints Day. The team began playing in 1967 and spent its early years searching for consistency. The Saints did not record their first winning season until 1987, their 21st season.
The organization began a major turnaround in the late 1980s under head coach Jim Mora, reaching the playoffs four times between 1987 and 1992 and winning its first division championship in 1991. Players such as Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Morten Andersen and Archie Manning helped establish the foundation of Saints football.
The greatest chapter in franchise history began when Sean Payton became head coach in 2006. That same year, quarterback Drew Brees arrived in New Orleans and helped transform the Saints into one of the NFL’s most productive offenses.
The breakthrough came after the 2009 season. New Orleans defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV, capturing the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. The victory remains the defining achievement of the organization.
The Saints have won one Super Bowl championship, one NFC championship and seven NFC South division titles.
Saints Legends and All-Time Greats
New Orleans has produced generations of outstanding players. Drew Brees, Archie Manning, Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Willie Roaf, Morten Andersen and Marques Colston are among the most important figures in franchise history.
Brees remains the Saints’ all-time leader in passing yards, finishing his New Orleans career with 68,010 yards. Alvin Kamara is the franchise’s career rushing leader, while Marques Colston holds the team record for receptions. Morten Andersen remains New Orleans’ all-time leading scorer.
In 2026, the Saints are also celebrating another major milestone for Brees. The legendary quarterback was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 in August, adding another historic achievement to his remarkable career.
New Orleans Saints Today
The Saints enter the 2026 NFL season under head coach Kellen Moore, with the organization focused on developing a younger roster and establishing a new identity.
One of the biggest storylines is the running-back situation. New Orleans signed Travis Etienne during the offseason and later acquired Zamir White from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for linebacker Deion Jones. The moves became particularly important after Alvin Kamara suffered a sprained MCL and was expected to miss approximately four to six weeks.
The Saints have also been evaluating several rookies during preseason. Defensive tackle Christen Miller has impressed with his run defense, while offensive guard Jeremiah Wright has shown improvement. Wide receiver Barion Brown and other young players are competing for important roster opportunities as New Orleans approaches the regular season.
New Orleans suffered a difficult preseason result against the Los Angeles Rams, losing 34-0, with the Rams’ defense controlling the game. The Saints are using the final preseason period to evaluate their remaining roster battles before the regular season begins.
