Washington Commanders
Washington Commanders: History, Championships, Players and Latest Team Information
The Washington Commanders are one of the NFL’s oldest franchises, with a history dating back to 1932. Based in the Washington, D.C., area, the team competes in the NFC East alongside the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders play their home games at Northwest Stadium and enter the 2026 season looking to build on the progress of the previous campaign.
Washington Commanders History
The franchise was established in 1932 as the Boston Braves before becoming the Boston Redskins in 1933 and moving to Washington in 1937. The organization won its first NFL championship in its first season in Washington, defeating the Chicago Bears in the 1937 title game. Washington captured another NFL championship in 1942.
The franchise’s most successful period came after the AFL-NFL merger. Under legendary head coach Joe Gibbs, Washington developed into a consistent contender and won three Super Bowl championships.
The first came following the 1982 season, when Washington defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. The team returned to the championship game in the 1983 season and won Super Bowl XXII after defeating the Denver Broncos. Washington’s third Super Bowl victory came following the 1991 season, when the team defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI.
Washington has won three Super Bowls and five NFC championships, along with multiple division titles. The franchise’s long history has also produced dozens of Hall of Fame players and coaches.
Commanders Legends and All-Time Greats
Washington has featured many of the NFL’s most influential players. Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Bobby Mitchell, John Riggins, Art Monk, Darrell Green, Charles Mann, Dexter Manley and Sean Taylor are among the most celebrated figures in franchise history.
Sammy Baugh helped establish Washington as an NFL power during the 1930s and 1940s, while John Riggins became one of the defining players of the franchise’s Super Bowl era. Darrell Green spent his entire career in Washington and became one of the league’s greatest cornerbacks.
More recently, the franchise has centered its offense around quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Daniels immediately became one of the league’s most exciting young quarterbacks and helped Washington reach the NFC Championship Game during his rookie season.
Washington Commanders Today
The Commanders enter the 2026 NFL season with Dan Quinn as head coach and Jayden Daniels leading the offense. The team is attempting to build on its young core while strengthening the roster around its franchise quarterback. NFL lists Quinn as Washington’s head coach, with Josh Harris as owner and Northwest Stadium as the team’s home venue.
Daniels is entering an important third season. After an elbow injury ended his 2025 campaign early, the quarterback has returned to preseason preparation and has expressed confidence in his readiness for the new season. Quinn and the coaching staff have also emphasized the value of joint practices in preparing Daniels without unnecessary preseason-game exposure.
Washington opened the 2026 preseason with a 20-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins before falling 17-13 to the Detroit Lions in Week 2. The Commanders are scheduled to finish preseason against the Baltimore Ravens on August 28.
The team has also dealt with important roster and injury developments. Veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries was reportedly signed after starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps. Washington also placed linebacker Drake Jackson on injured reserve and released veteran safety Will Harris as roster decisions intensified ahead of the regular season.
Washington opens its 2026 regular season on September 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The schedule also includes early NFC East matchups with Dallas and Philadelphia, plus an international home game against Indianapolis in Week 4.
