Pixel 11 Pro’s HiLight LED Gets a Major Upgrade From an Open-Source App

Google’s new HiLight feature was supposed to give the Pixel 11 Pro a smarter way to communicate notifications without forcing users to constantly check their screens.
But at launch, the feature was surprisingly limited.
Now, an independent open-source app called HiLight Studio is showing what Google’s colorful rear LED could actually be capable of.
HiLight was impressive hardware with limited software
Google introduced HiLight with the Pixel 11 Pro lineup as a way to provide visual information while the phone is placed face down.
The LED system sits around the rear camera area and uses different colors and lighting effects to communicate certain alerts.
Google’s goal is to help users stay informed while spending less time looking at their phone screen. The company says HiLight can provide color-coded notifications for certain timely information.
The problem is that Google’s initial implementation is extremely restricted.
At launch, HiLight primarily works for calls from favorite contacts and when Gemini is active. It doesn’t initially behave like the traditional notification LEDs that Android users have enjoyed on some older smartphones.
That left many Pixel users wondering why Google had included the hardware without giving them much control over it.
HiLight Studio changes the equation
That’s where HiLight Studio comes in.
Developed as an open-source project, the app gives users considerably more control over the Pixel 11 Pro’s rear lighting system.
Instead of limiting the LED to Google’s predefined functions, HiLight Studio can associate lighting effects with notifications from different applications.
Users can choose different colors and effects, allowing the rear light to become a visual notification system rather than simply an indicator for a handful of Google-controlled situations.
For example, a user could potentially configure different lighting behavior for messaging, social media or other supported applications.
That is much closer to what many people expected HiLight to be when Google first demonstrated the feature.
More colors and lighting effects
HiLight Studio also expands the customization options considerably.
According to reports, the application provides a wider color selection than Google’s built-in implementation and allows users to adjust settings such as brightness, intensity, saturation and timing.
It also supports multiple lighting patterns, including effects such as pulses, comets and rainbow-style animations. Presets can reportedly be imported and exported, making it easier for users to share configurations.
That flexibility turns HiLight from a novelty into something that could become genuinely useful during everyday phone use.
There is a catch
Getting HiLight Studio running isn’t as simple as installing a normal app from the Google Play Store.
The application is currently distributed outside the Play Store and requires sideloading. Some of the deeper functionality also requires additional Android permissions and setup involving Shizuku and wireless debugging.
That means HiLight Studio is primarily aimed at enthusiasts and experienced Android users for now.
Someone who simply wants a plug-and-play notification system may not want to deal with developer settings and additional permissions.
The developer has also considered hardware limitations
There is another important consideration: the HiLight LED wasn’t designed to remain illuminated continuously.
HiLight Studio includes safeguards designed to reduce the risk of excessive use. Reports indicate that the system can automatically reduce brightness if the light remains active for an extended period, with the developer specifically noting a gradual dimming behavior after around 10 seconds.
That’s an important addition because unrestricted control over a physical LED needs to account for heat, power consumption and hardware longevity.
Google may have left the door open
Interestingly, HiLight may have more potential than Google’s current software suggests.
Recent reporting has indicated that HiLight is integrated with Google’s Phone app and WhatsApp, suggesting that the underlying system is capable of supporting third-party applications.
That raises an obvious question: if the hardware and software infrastructure can support broader notification behavior, why is Google’s official implementation so limited?
Google may eventually expand HiLight through software updates.
If that happens, the third-party work demonstrated by HiLight Studio could serve as an example of the feature’s potential.
A familiar Android story
This isn’t the first time Android developers have taken a promising phone feature and pushed it beyond the manufacturer’s original intentions.
Google designed HiLight around a relatively simple idea: provide useful information without requiring users to unlock their phones.
Independent developers are now demonstrating a much broader interpretation of that idea.
Instead of simply telling users that a favorite contact is calling, the rear light could become a customizable visual language for the entire phone.
Different apps could have different colors. Different types of notifications could have different patterns. Users could potentially glance at the back of their phone and understand what happened without turning on the display.
That could make HiLight one of the more interesting features on the Pixel 11 Pro.
Will Google make HiLight better?
For now, HiLight Studio is evidence of what the Pixel 11 Pro’s hardware can do rather than an official Google upgrade.
Google’s current implementation remains intentionally limited, while the third-party app requires technical setup and is not yet a mainstream Play Store installation.
But the contrast is striking.
Google introduced HiLight as a way to reduce screen checking. An independent developer has now demonstrated how much more useful the idea could become.
The real test will be whether Google responds by expanding official HiLight support.
If it does, the Pixel 11 Pro’s most criticized new feature could eventually become one of its most distinctive.
