Emergency responders in the United Kingdom have issued an alert to dog owners after a substance suspected to be palm oil washed ashore on Egremont beach in Wirral, Merseyside. The emergency response was initiated after the Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team received reports from the public concerning unusual material spotted along the shoreline. Coastguard officers were dispatched to the site, where they identified and confirmed multiple waxy lumps scattered along the beach.
Following their inspection of the shoreline, rescue officers gathered several of the larger waxy fragments and placed them into bags for safe removal. These secured materials were subsequently scheduled to be collected and formally disposed of by Wirral Council. However, emergency officials emphasized that the initial cleanup efforts on the beach might not have cleared all of the toxic material from the waterfront.
The coastguard issued a warning that additional deposits could continue to pose a threat to beachgoers and pets over the next few days. Officials noted that “further pieces may still be present or could wash ashore with subsequent tides” as sea conditions change. Consequently, dog owners were urged to exercise heightened vigilance while walking their pets along the coastline.
Although palm oil is a common substance widely used throughout the commercial food industry, it presents a serious hazard when dumped at sea. Exposure to marine environments can cause the oil to degrade and become toxic. Emergency personnel warned that domestic dogs are particularly vulnerable to the substance because they are often drawn to its smell and may attempt to eat it. If ingested by a dog, the toxic material can provoke a severe reaction that can prove fatal.
To reduce risks to visitors, authorities advised the public to keep both pets and young children away from any unusual waxy or oily deposits found along the sand. Furthermore, the coastguard specifically instructed members of the public to “avoid handling them with bare hands” if any unfamiliar substances are encountered along the shore.
The warning follows previous instances in the region where washed-up palm oil caused fatalities among domestic animals. In January 2020, conservation group the National Trust issued a public warning after a dog died from eating palm oil that had washed up on Formby beach in the nearby area of Sefton.
Background
Egremont is located on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, North West England, along the estuary of the River Mersey. Palm oil is routinely transported internationally by sea cargo. When ships discharge residues into marine waters, the semi-solid oil can drift long distances before washing ashore on public beaches.
