Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell established a new Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) record on Thursday by scoring at least 20 points in her 21st consecutive game. Despite her individual achievement, Indiana saw its five-game winning streak come to an end following a 91-85 defeat against the Dallas Wings.
Mitchell surpassed the previous league milestone set by Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson. The record-breaking basket arrived during the closing seconds of the second quarter, when Mitchell scored a layup off an inbound pass with 5.4 seconds remaining before halftime. The play immediately followed a sequence where Dallas player Paige Bueckers and Indiana player Caitlin Clark became entangled while Bueckers attempted a foul. Mitchell headed to the locker room with 21 points.
She finished the match with 37 points, matching her personal season high. Mitchell shot 9-of-18 from the field, made four of her seven three-point attempts, and hit all 15 of her free throw attempts. She also provided five assists, meaning she either scored or assisted on 48 of Indiana’s 85 points. The performance was her seventh 20-point half of the current season, placing her second in the league behind Wilson, who entered Thursday’s games with nine such halves.
By making all 15 free throw attempts, Mitchell became only the fifth player in WNBA history to shoot 100 percent from the foul line with 15 or more attempts in a game. The performance was also the third time in her career that she recorded at least 35 points, shot 50 percent or better, and delivered five assists, tying a league record shared with Wilson, Diana Taurasi, and Kelsey Plum.
The record-breaking performance came just two days after Mitchell was forced to exit early during Indiana’s win over the Toronto Tempo. Following that game, Indiana head coach Stephanie White informed reporters that Mitchell appeared to have suffered from overheating, raising questions about her conditioning prior to Thursday’s historic display.
Despite setting the individual mark, Mitchell expressed frustration with the game’s outcome. She insisted her focus remained on winning rather than individual statistics, remarking that “keeping the main thing the main thing is important” while offering praise to her teammates for supporting her offensive run.
Background
The WNBA is North America’s premier professional basketball league for women, featuring 12 teams in its standard regular season format along with expansion franchises. Scoring consistency over long stretches of games is rare due to defensive adjustments and physical fatigue across the regular season schedule.
