A scheduled mixed martial arts contest in Tampa, Florida, will no longer feature a world title on the line after one of the fighters missed the required weight division threshold by seven pounds during Friday’s weigh-in.
Brazilian competitor Ketlen Vieira weighed in at 152 pounds ahead of her planned Saturday bout against fellow Brazilian Cris Cyborg. The match was originally sanctioned as a 145-pound fight for the Professional Fighters League featherweight world championship. Cyborg successfully met the 145-pound championship limit during the morning weigh-ins.
The significant weight excess threatened to force the entire bout to be called off. Following negotiations among event organizers and representative teams, both parties finalized a catchweight agreement that allows the fight to proceed. Consequently, Cyborg’s featherweight title will not be on the line during the contest, and Vieira will forfeit a portion of her official fight purse.
In statements to MMA Fighting, Vieira explained that unexpected medical complications halted her weight reduction routine. The 34-year-old fighter stated that she experienced severe pain in her stomach and kidneys throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning. She said her head coach, Andre Pederneiras, massaged her back during the night to help her rest before deciding to stop her weight loss process to protect her health. Vieira, who has recorded 15 fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and previously competed at 135 pounds, emphasized that she was sweating properly and on track before the sudden physical distress occurred.
Cyborg stated that she initially assumed the bout would be cancelled after learning on Friday morning about her opponent’s weight issue. In an interview with ESPN Brasil, the 41-year-old titleholder remarked that Vieira had fought at 135 pounds before moving up to 145 pounds for a fight in May. Cyborg expressed satisfaction that talks saved the match, saying, “I’m really happy that the fight is going to happen.” On social media, Cyborg added, “We don’t care.”
The contest holds additional significance as Cyborg previously indicated Saturday’s event could be her retirement fight. Having made her professional debut in 2005, Cyborg has spent 21 years competing at the top level of mixed martial arts.
Background
In professional mixed martial arts, fighters are required to weigh in within strict limits for designated weight divisions prior to competition. When a fighter misses the weight limit, fights are often either cancelled or converted into non-title catchweight bouts, usually accompanied by financial penalties such as forfeiting a portion of the fighter’s purse to their opponent.
Cris Cyborg is widely considered one of the most successful women’s mixed martial artists in the sport’s history, having captured world titles across four major promotions: Strikeforce, Bellator, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
