The international game puts North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick back in the spotlight as he begins his second season in collegiate athletics following a long career in professional American football.

McCann-Gibbs developed his kicking through the Leader Kicking academy, a training pathway previously used by New Orleans Saints kicker Charlie Smyth. Smyth, who was raised less than 10 miles away in Mayobridge, earned a starting role in six NFL games last season and completed 12 out of 16 field goal attempts. McCann-Gibbs maintained regular contact with Smyth for guidance prior to the Dublin game, noting that seeing an established route to professional sports inspires him to perform consistently with an ultimate goal of reaching the NFL.
