Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89 After 35-Year Reign

King Harald V of Norway, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, died on Friday at the age of 89. According to a statement from the royal palace, the king passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. local time at Oslo University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a rare blood disorder, hemolytic anemia, since mid-August. His 53-year-old son automatically succeeded him upon his death, taking the regnal name King Haakon VIII.

A period of national mourning was declared across Norway, with official flags lowered to half-mast. Crowds gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to leave flowers, cards, and flags. Well-wishers held overnight vigils as the monarch’s health deteriorated in his final days, prompting Queen Sonja and the crown prince to cancel their public engagements to remain at his bedside. A motor procession later transported the king’s casket from the hospital to the royal palace.

King Harald assumed the throne in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. Throughout his 35-year reign, he repeatedly rejected speculation about abdication, maintaining that his constitutional oath was for life. King Haakon VIII is scheduled to take an oath of allegiance to the constitution before parliament next Tuesday. Parliament President Masud Gharahkhani stated that the new monarch will swear to govern in accordance with the law, followed by a televised address addressing the sovereign’s constitutional role.

Born in 1937, Harald fled Norway with his family during the 1940 Nazi invasion, spending much of World War II in the United States before returning in 1945. Historical reports differ slightly on his birth milestone, describing him as the first prince born in Norway either in more than 500 years or specifically since 1370. Prior to his accession, he represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games and skippered a yacht to a World Championship gold medal in 1987. He also broke royal precedent by marrying commoner Sonja Haraldsen in 1968 after waiting nine years for official consent.

During his time on the throne, King Harald modernized the monarchy and gained a reputation as an approachable, unifying leader. He was widely praised for his empathetic guidance following the 2011 far-right terror attacks that killed 77 people, and later drew global attention for a 2016 address promoting tolerance, diversity, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Tributes were paid by leaders across Europe, including British King Charles III, who praised Harald as a “towering figure” who served with “warmth and humility.” Expressions of condolence were also offered by Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf, Danish King Frederik, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
