Veteran English footballer Kevin Ellison is preparing to feature in the preliminary round of the FA Cup for Cheshire-based club Vauxhall Motors, continuing a career that recently passed the milestone of 1,000 matches across 18 different clubs over 29 years.
Ellison, who currently plays in the eighth tier of the English football league system, has represented teams across all top eight divisions. Raised near Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, he played in Liverpool’s youth setup alongside future international players Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard before being released at age 15. Following his release, Ellison worked on building sites and delivered furniture while competing in non-league football for teams including Southport, Chorley, Conwy United, and Altrincham.
His performances earned him a £50,000 transfer to top-flight side Leicester City in 2001. However, his Premier League experience was limited to a single appearance as an 84th-minute substitute against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Recalling his brief top-tier outing, Ellison stated, “I had four touches and I fouled Paul Scholes.”
After leaving Leicester, Ellison spent the majority of his career in the lower divisions of English professional football. His career highlights include winning promotion to the second-tier Championship with Hull City in 2005, appearing in Wembley play-off finals for Rotherham United and Newport County, and scoring 124 goals in 553 fourth-tier league appearances, including 81 goals during a nine-year spell at Morecambe between 2011 and 2020.
Despite his on-field achievements, Ellison faced significant off-field difficulties. Following relegation with Chester City in 2009 and the deaths of close family members and friends, he struggled with severe depression and financial worries. He revealed that his darkest moment occurred while driving on the M6 motorway, where he contemplated crashing his car. He credits seeking professional counselling and speaking openly with people close to him as essential to his recovery.
Today, the father of two balances his part-time playing commitments at Northern Premier League Division One West side Vauxhall Motors with a full-time role in safeguarding at a secondary school in Liverpool.
Background
The English football league system ranks clubs across hierarchical divisions, ranging from the top-tier Premier League down through the English Football League and into regional non-league divisions. The FA Cup is England’s main domestic cup competition, structured to allow semi-professional and amateur clubs from lower tiers to compete against top professional teams.
