A sudden glacial collapse along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region triggered severe flash flooding and landslides on Wednesday, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing across damaged mountain valleys.

Official casualty figures provided by authorities on Friday reflected significant discrepancies. Nepalese disaster agencies and police reported between 469 and 579 deaths in Nepal. In Tibet, Chinese state media reported between three and five fatalities. The number of missing individuals remains high across both territories, with Nepalese disaster officials reporting at least 1,924 people unaccounted for, while Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported 558 missing in Tibet’s Gyirong county.

Hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims on high-altitude expeditions are among the missing. Official reports differ on the total count: Nepal’s Department of Tourism reported 668 out-of-contact tourists from 34 countries, while a separate Nepalese government document listed over 517 foreign nationals. The missing include 90 citizens from the United States, 62 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, up to 39 from Australia, 33 from the United Kingdom, and up to 30 from Canada. Disagreements also exist regarding Indian nationals; India’s foreign ministry reported at least 320 citizens missing, whereas Nepalese tourism figures listed 177. Chinese officials reported approximately 100 Chinese nationals missing within Nepal.

Initial assessments suggested a magnitude 4.4 earthquake caused the disaster, but the United States Geological Survey later determined that a massive collapse of glacial ice and rock into the Lhende Khola river generated a magnitude 5.2 seismic event. The avalanche sent floodwaters surging into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, causing water levels in the Trishuli to rise by up to 9 metres within 30 minutes. Mud and debris swept up to 100 kilometres downstream, destroying roads, vehicles, and border checkpoints at Raswagadhi and Gyirong Port.

Rescue operations rely heavily on military and private helicopters due to severe infrastructure damage. Ground teams face blocked roads, destroyed bridges, and ongoing rain. Search efforts were briefly halted on Friday when a temporary lake—containing an estimated 2.5 million cubic metres of water formed by a landslide dam in Tibet—began overflowing. Experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development warned that secondary flooding remains a risk if river channels remain blocked by debris.

The border region connecting northern Nepal and Tibet is a major transit area for international trekking and religious pilgrimages. Sacred sites such as Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet draw thousands of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain pilgrims annually, many traveling overland through Nepalese river valleys.

The steep Himalayan topography is highly vulnerable to seasonal weather extremes and glacial hazards. Events such as glacial lake outburst floods and ice-rock avalanches occur when alpine ice bodies destabilize, sending sudden torrents down narrow gorges where infrastructure is sparse and emergency access is difficult.
