Elversberg Win Bundesliga Debut Following Rapid Promotion

Elversberg, a small town located in south-west Germany near the border with France, marked its inaugural appearance in the country’s top football league on Saturday by securing a 3-2 victory against Bayer Leverkusen, who were league champions two years ago.

With a population of just 13,000 residents and no railway station, Elversberg is the smallest town ever to have a team promoted to the Bundesliga. The victory comes after a swift rise through the German football league system, during which the club secured three promotions over a five-year period to move from the fourth tier to the top flight.

Unlike other lower-tier clubs that have experienced fast promotions with the help of wealthy owners, Elversberg operated without major financial backing. Instead, the team relied on a distinct recruitment model focused on scouting and developing emerging young players.

Former scout Ole Book played a central role in this strategy after joining the club in 2017. Promoted to sporting director within a year, Book focused on recruiting young talent and providing them a platform to play regularly. One key success was forward Nick Woltemade, who joined on loan from Werder Bremen II in 2022 and scored 10 goals. Woltemade subsequently moved to Stuttgart before completing a club-record £69 million transfer to Newcastle last year.

Book’s success in developing players attracted attention from larger teams, leading to his appointment as sporting director at Borussia Dortmund in April. Borussia Dortmund highlighted his track record of spotting young talent and building value within the squad. Elversberg technical director Josef Welzmuller emphasized that Book’s departure has not altered the club’s core strategy, which continues to prioritize youthful, high-intensity recruits.

Welzmuller explained that the club’s rise was not a sudden fairytale, but rather the result of solid preparation, clear decision-making, and hard work at every step. Local interest in the team has grown significantly, with club flags and merchandise becoming visible throughout the town’s streets.

Head coach Vincent Wagner had previously described the challenge of avoiding relegation this season as being “like a journey to Mars.” However, ahead of the opening fixture, Wagner stated that after a long pre-season and keeping most targeted players, the team was prepared to compete against top-flight opposition regardless of differences in budget and infrastructure.
