Newcastle Midfielder Lewis Miley Set to Face Former Team-Mate Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley is preparing to face former team-mate Sandro Tonali for the first time on Saturday, as Newcastle travel to face Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The fixture follows a summer of major changes within Newcastle’s midfield, highlighted by the departure of Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur under manager Roberto de Zerbi, alongside Bruno Guimaraes’s move to Arsenal.

To address these departures, Newcastle recruited three new midfielders during the summer transfer window, including Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City in a transfer deal valued at up to £52 million. However, Gonzalez is expected to complement rather than replace Miley, with Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle maintaining confidence in the 20-year-old academy graduate. Miley committed his future to the club on May 25 by signing a new long-term contract on the same day Tottenham made contact with Tonali.

Despite missing most of pre-season while recovering from a broken leg and managing only 45 minutes of warm-up action, Miley was selected by Jaissle to start in Newcastle’s opening match of the Premier League season, a 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Jaissle praised Miley’s display, remarking that “showing that in the first match is something special” after returning from an extended spell out injured. Jaissle added that he is cautious not to overburden the young player, even as Miley steps into the positional void left by departing players.

Miley developed his versatility under former Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe, who utilized him at right-back during the previous campaign when defender Tino Livramento suffered a series of injuries. Operating across different roles, Miley logged 1,403 minutes of top-flight action before turning 20 in May, the most played by any English teenager in the Premier League last season.

Across all teenagers in the top division, Miley ranked first for assists with four, successful passes with 738, successful passes in the final third with 188, line-breaking passes with 164, and interceptions with 20. He also finished second among teenage players for possession won, securing the ball 69 times, and third for successful duels with 84.

Former England international Kieran Trippier also praised Miley’s progression into a central role, noting that the midfielder is “more than capable” of managing increased expectations. Trippier, who previously passed the captain’s armband to Miley during a Champions League fixture against PSV, said Miley has “become a big presence” while remaining grounded and eager to learn. Miley’s younger brother, Mason, is also currently signed to Newcastle United.
