The Ghana Football Association has reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the men’s national football team, two months after the veteran manager stepped down following the country’s FIFA World Cup campaign. The 73-year-old Portuguese coach takes charge of the Black Stars for an open-ended term starting with the next international fixtures.
The decision brings Queiroz back to the post he departed shortly after guiding Ghana to the round of 32 at the World Cup. He had originally taken over the squad on short notice after the GFA dismissed previous manager Otto Addo 72 days before the tournament following March friendly defeats against Austria and Germany.
Return to the National Team
In a statement released on Wednesday, the GFA announced that Queiroz would “embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window.” The federation highlighted his background and existing familiarity with the squad, adding that his experience would “position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter.”
Queiroz’s immediate focus will be qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana is scheduled to face Ivory Coast in home and away group qualifiers during the upcoming international break, which runs from September 21 to October 6.
Decades of International Experience
Born in Mozambique, the former goalkeeper has built an extensive international managerial career over more than three decades. In addition to his work with Ghana, Queiroz has coached national teams in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, including tenures with South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, and Japan.
He managed Portugal during the early 1990s and returned to guide his home country to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup. Queiroz also spent a lengthy spell leading Iran, taking charge during the past three World Cup tournaments and securing three wins across 13 matches.
Background
Ghana’s national team has undergone frequent coaching changes in recent years. Queiroz took over the Black Stars just over two months before the World Cup, navigating the group stage to reach the knockout rounds before resigning at the conclusion of the tournament.
