USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Arrives in Thailand After 250-Day Deployment

Nearly 5,000 sailors aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Thai coastal city of Pattaya on Wednesday for shore leave following a record 250-day deployment in the Middle East. The port call provides the crew a temporary rest period before the vessel resumes its transit across the Pacific to California.

Shore Leave and Local Commerce

Upon arriving on land, many crew members spent their initial hours shopping at local commercial centers and gathering at seaside accommodations, including the Hard Rock Hotel. During the evening, personnel visited Pattaya’s central entertainment area along Walking Street, where local venues displayed signs welcoming the warship’s crew.

The visit comes as Pattaya’s tourism sector copes with reduced international visitor numbers caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Local business operators anticipated that crew members, carrying months of unspent service pay, would stimulate the local economy. Restaurant owner Kosol Homkhunthod noted that the influx provided a noticeable increase in activity following a period of sluggish trade. Conversely, bar owner Kanta Saenkla stated that although many sailors walked through the venue districts, customer spending in local bars remained lower than during previous naval visits.

Onshore Supervision and Regulations

To oversee personnel during their stay, members of the Shore Liaison Group operated throughout the city. Wearing identifiable clothing, the liaison officers were assigned to maintain military discipline, monitor younger crew members, and coordinate efforts with Thai municipal authorities.

Personnel were informed that participation in the sex industry is strictly prohibited, as prostitution is illegal under Thai law. US Naval Attaché Kristopher Robinson declined to detail specific banned activities, stating that personnel would act “in accordance with US law, US naval regulations, and the laws of Thailand” while focusing on personal rest.

Operations and Crew Morale

The stopover follows prolonged military operations against Iran in the Gulf. Sailors were instructed not to discuss operational details or internal ship conditions during shore leave, amid public discussions in the United States regarding the length and strain of the deployment.

Family members described the extended deployment as a period of heightened concern. Shakeira Fairfax, mother of 25-year-old sailor Jada Fairfax, described the months following the onset of Middle East hostilities as an “uncertain” and “scary” time that impacted crew morale. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one senior crew member remarked that remaining aboard the crowded vessel for nine months “got boring,” adding that the crew was eager to finish the journey home.
