The New England Patriots have agreed to a four-year, $135 million contract extension with cornerback Christian Gonzalez, according to reports citing unnamed sources. The deal makes the 24-year-old the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. Finalized less than 48 hours before New England’s regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, the agreement resolves months of contract uncertainty surrounding the team’s top defensive back.

Sources told ESPN that the contract includes $102 million in guaranteed money. Additionally, sources cited by NFL Network reported that Gonzalez received a $33 million signing bonus, which is the largest ever granted to an NFL cornerback.

With this extension, Gonzalez surpasses Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who previously set the position record last month with a four-year, $132 million deal that included over $101 million guaranteed. Both players are represented by the same agent, Reggie Johnson.
