Performance Boost Three times greater than predecessor
Commercial Release First quarter of 2027
Capacity Goal More than 20 gigawatts by 2032

Alibaba Group shares rose by approximately 3% in Hong Kong trading on Tuesday after the Chinese technology company disclosed plans to deploy a new artificial intelligence processor and expand its global data center network. The announcements were delivered at the annual Apsara Conference held by the firm’s cloud computing unit in Hangzhou. The strategic focus underscores the company’s commitment to building the physical and technical foundation required for advanced computing workloads.

The company introduced its next-generation artificial intelligence chip, designated the Zhenwu V900. Alibaba reported that the new hardware provides three times the computing performance of the Zhenwu M890 model released in May. Mass production and market availability for the Zhenwu V900 are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Earlier iterations of the Zhenwu chip series are currently utilized by more than 650 corporate clients operating in industries such as automotive manufacturing, finance, energy production, and industrial manufacturing.

Infrastructure and Model Roadmap

In addition to hardware developments, Alibaba Cloud announced an objective to expand its international data center footprint to more than 20 gigawatts of total capacity by 2032. The buildout is part of a multi-tiered plan spanning custom silicon, hardware facilities, and artificial intelligence software. The firm confirmed that its Qwen 4 language model is undergoing active training, with development plans also established for future Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 versions.

Speaking at the conference, Alibaba Group Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu stated that automated reasoning technologies maintain an “enormous growth runway.” Comparing current artificial intelligence progress to the historical adoption of electric power, Wu noted that “AI coding is simply the light bulb of the machine intelligence era.”

Global Competition in AI Capacity

Alibaba’s announcements come amid an international surge in data infrastructure spending by major technology vendors. Earlier in the month, Nvidia outlined plans to work alongside Australian partner companies to support up to 2 gigawatts of specialized computing facilities in the country by 2027. In July, Meta disclosed plans for a 1-gigawatt data center in Alberta, Canada, projecting a construction timeline of up to three years at a cost of approximately $9 billion. Within China, domestic competitor Huawei recently introduced an infrastructure architecture designed to support scale-outs of up to one million computing chips.
