August matched July 2023 as the hottest month ever recorded globally, according to data from the European Union’s Copernicus climate service. Temperatures reached 1.65°C above pre-industrial averages, surpassing the 1.5°C threshold established in international climate agreements. The record high was driven by long-term global warming combined with a strengthening El Niño weather event in the Pacific Ocean.

Rising global temperatures and El Niño

The Copernicus climate service reported that the combined effects of greenhouse gas emissions and ocean heat release created unprecedented global atmospheric conditions. El Niño, a natural phenomenon marked by elevated sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean, releases heat into the atmosphere and elevates global temperatures over roughly a year. Scientists with the agency noted that the current El Niño continues to strengthen and could become one of the most powerful on record, with its primary impact on global heat expected over the coming year.

United Nations climate chief Simon Stiell stated that the record highlights humanity’s impact on global weather patterns, calling the figures “this is the spiralling price of humanity’s fossil fuel addiction” and warning of a growing crisis. Dr Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus, described August as “a remarkable month in the global climate record”, adding that extreme heat is increasingly affecting ecosystems, communities, and economies across both land and oceans.

Record heat across Europe and regional impacts

The record-setting month concluded western Europe’s warmest summer, surpassing the severe heat wave of 2003. In the United Kingdom, the Met Office recorded the hottest summer since measurements began in 1884, concluding that human-caused climate change had made such temperatures approximately 130 times more likely.

The elevated heat caused wide disruptions, impacting agricultural production, straining healthcare facilities, interrupting schooling, and accelerating drought conditions and wildfires across Europe. Tens of thousands of lives were lost due to the heat conditions. Outside Europe, the weather pattern altered regional rainfall, including severe flooding in Asia that displaced tens of thousands of people in the Philippines.

Future projections and climate targets

Exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels during a single month does not mark a permanent crossing of international climate limits, but scientists warn that it reflects a clear trajectory toward that outcome. Extreme weather researcher Dr Clair Barnes of Imperial College London emphasized that the figures represent “a very real human cost” and rejected the idea that these conditions are merely a fixed baseline. Barnes stated that without ending fossil fuel use, heat records will continue to be surpassed faster than societies can adapt.

International climate negotiations established a target of limiting long-term global average temperatures to within 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels to prevent the most severe consequences of climate change. The European Union’s Copernicus climate service tracks atmospheric and oceanic measurements using satellite data and historical records to monitor changes in global climate patterns.
