British featherweight fighter Kurtis Campbell is scheduled to face American opponent Trevor Peek on Saturday at UFC Paris, hosted at the Accor Arena. The 24-year-old martial artist from Liverpool enters the bout looking to recover from a loss in his promotional debut earlier this year.
Early Life and Entry into Combat Sports
Campbell first entered martial arts training at age seven, when his parents, Jay and Michelle, enrolled him in Muay Thai classes after he was targeted by bullies at his primary school in Liverpool. Though initially intended solely for self-defence, the discipline quickly became a primary focus for Campbell. By the age of 15, he secured his first international Muay Thai championship.
Throughout his secondary education, Campbell maintained a heavy training schedule, which included regularly running nearly five miles to and from school. During his preparation for GCSE examinations, he missed a day of school to attend a Liverpool coaching seminar conducted by John Kavanagh, the trainer of former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor. Despite advice from teachers to establish a backup career plan, Campbell remained committed exclusively to fighting.
Path to Professional Promotion
Following his GCSEs at age 16, Campbell enrolled in a college program combining sport studies and football. He arranged an agreement with program leads allowing him to attend academic lectures while substituting combat sports training for time on the football field.
In regional competition, Campbell earned five championship titles across three weight divisions with the Full Contact Contender (FCC) promotion. His performances eventually led to a UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series.
Facing First Defeat in Over Seven Years
In March, Campbell made his UFC debut against Danny Silva, suffering a technical knockout (TKO) loss. The result marked Campbell’s first defeat in nearly seven and a half years, ending a winning streak that dated back to a December 2018 amateur loss against fellow Liverpudlian Liam McCracken.
Saturday’s fight against Peek marks Campbell’s second appearance in the UFC as he seeks his first victory under the promotion’s banner.
Background
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport combining techniques from various disciplines, including Muay Thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the world’s largest professional MMA organization. Independent regional promotions, such as the UK-based Full Contact Contender (FCC), act as developmental circuits where prospects build records before competing for major international contracts via talent-scouting events like Dana White’s Contender Series.
