Five Celestial Events Set for Autumn Night Skies

As autumn brings longer nights to the Northern Hemisphere, stargazers will have multiple opportunities to observe major celestial events over the coming months. The upcoming sequence features a prominent star cluster, two distinct meteor showers, an early-morning planetary gathering, and a supermoon.

The season of viewing begins with the Pleiades star cluster, also referred to as the Seven Sisters or Messier 45. Positioned approximately 440 light-years from Earth in the constellation Taurus, the young star group becomes increasingly prominent in the eastern evening sky as autumn progresses. While named for seven sisters, most people can spot about six stars without optical aid, though binoculars or telescopes reveal many more.

October and November Meteor Showers

In late October, the Orionid meteor shower reaches its peak around 21 October, remaining active from early October into November. The event takes place twice a year as Earth travels through dust particles left behind by Halley’s comet. Upon entering the atmosphere at high speeds, these debris fragments ignite, creating bright streaks that appear to originate from the constellation Orion. Observing from dark locations away from light pollution allows eyes to adapt for better viewing.

A second display, the Leonid meteor shower, is anticipated to peak around 17 November. Originating visually from the constellation Leo, the Leonids travel into Earth’s atmosphere at speeds near 70 kilometers per second, making them among the fastest meteors visible. Under ideal dark-sky conditions, observers may see 10 to 15 meteors per hour during the peak. Actual visibility depends on weather, moonlight, and artificial lighting. The optimal viewing window occurs after midnight and before dawn when Leo rises higher in the sky.

Planetary Gathering and November Supermoon

Before sunrise around 14 November, skywatchers can observe four planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter—above the horizon simultaneously. Venus and Jupiter will be easily visible due to their high brightness. Conversely, Mercury will present a greater viewing challenge because of its low position near the horizon and proximity to the morning sun’s glare.

The autumn spectacles conclude with the full moon on 24 November, traditionally called the Beaver Moon. The name originates from the period when beavers actively store food and build lodges for the winter season. The event will also be a supermoon, which occurs when a full moon reaches a point in its orbit relatively close to Earth, making it appear brighter and larger than usual. This event marks the first in a consecutive series of four supermoons lasting through February 2027.

Background

Traditional names for monthly full moons often derive from seasonal animal behaviors or historical agricultural cues. Supermoons occur when the Moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closer to Earth during its full phase, creating a visibly larger lunar disk in the night sky.
