French Forward Bradley Barcola Set for £123m Liverpool Transfer Following PSG Success

English Premier League club Liverpool has agreed to a £123 million deal to sign French winger Bradley Barcola from Paris St-Germain. The transfer marks a significant step in the career of the 21-year-old forward, who has established himself among Europe’s prominent attacking players after rising through the youth ranks at Lyon.

Barcola leaves Paris following a successful three-year period in which PSG secured three consecutive Ligue 1 championships alongside back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. His tenure with the French club culminated in a European final victory over Arsenal in Budapest. Internationally, Barcola made his senior debut for France two years ago and scored three goals during the national team’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

The forward’s path to top-tier football involved overcoming early career setbacks. After establishing himself in Lyon’s first team under former manager Peter Bosz, Barcola lost his spot and was moved to the reserves following the appointment of Laurent Blanc in October 2022. According to reporting by French sports publication L’Equipe, Barcola was close to joining Swiss side St Gallen on loan in January 2023 to secure regular playing time.

His situation at Lyon changed following an incident involving team-mate Karl Toko Ekambi, who kicked a rubbish container in frustration after being substituted during a 2-1 loss to Strasbourg. The televised gesture fractured Toko Ekambi’s relationship with supporters, ending his career at the club and opening a spot in the starting lineup for Barcola. Barcola took advantage of the opportunity, scoring five goals over the remainder of the season, including a match-winner against PSG in April 2023.

Five months later, Barcola transferred to PSG for a reported £38.5 million, arriving shortly after Brazilian forward Neymar moved to Saudi Arabia. Barcola made his PSG debut as a substitute against his former club Lyon, where he was booed by home supporters. Nicknamed the “grasshopper” due to his quick movement and slim build, the winger quickly solidified his position in the Paris squad.

His family played a core role in his development, with his father, Yves, regularly analyzing match footage with him. When facing media criticism early in his PSG career, Barcola relied on family guidance, telling French newspaper Le Parisien, “I don’t listen to what’s said outside.” His elder brother, Malcolm, is also a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Moroccan club Ittihad Tanger and the Togo national team.
