Jewish Industry Figures Back Mark Ruffalo Following Antisemitism Accusations Over Paramount Merger Comments

Over 180 prominent Jewish figures, primarily from the entertainment industry, issued a statement on Wednesday backing American actor Mark Ruffalo after he faced allegations of antisemitism for opposing a proposed mega-merger in Hollywood. Ruffalo had publicly criticized the planned $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery by Paramount Skydance, linking the deal to executive support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The dispute began on August 21, when Ruffalo shared a video clip on Instagram featuring Safra Catz, executive vice chair of the technology company Oracle. In the video, Catz discussed offering Oracle’s technology to assist Israel following the October 2023 attack led by Hamas. Ruffalo criticized Catz and characterized Israel’s military actions as being powered by an “apartheid system of oppression” supported by Oracle technology. He also questioned political backing for the corporate deal, stating that major media mergers harm workers and industry competition.

Ruffalo connected Paramount to Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, whose family owns Paramount. Ellison has previously donated heavily to organizations supporting the Israeli military, including a $16.6 million contribution to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces in 2017. Ruffalo argued that the deal represented an alarming concentration of media power by figures with specific political agendas.

Paramount rejected Ruffalo’s statements, accusing the actor of invoking antisemitic tropes and stating that his language went “a bridge too far” for a corporate transaction. Ruffalo denied the allegation, calling Paramount’s response “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” and clarifying that criticizing government policies, military contracts, and corporate leaders does not equate to hostility toward Jewish people.

Pro-Israel advocacy organizations harshly condemned the actor. Jim Berk, chief executive of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, described the comments as “a textbook case of obsession and demonisation” of Jews. Anti-Defamation League chief Jonathan Greenblatt labeled the statement “cynical and sickening.” Conversely, the more than 180 Jewish figures who signed Wednesday’s statement rejected those accusations, arguing that conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism is a tactic used to silence dissent.

Ruffalo is not the only Hollywood figure opposing the acquisition. In April, more than 1,400 members of the film industry, including actors Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson, signed an open letter warning that the transaction would dangerously consolidate an already concentrated media landscape.
