Before the game, Marte spoke through an interpreter to publicly apologize for failing to report for a road game in Boston two weeks earlier. Marte explained that he woke up that morning in physical pain and decided on his own not to attend, stating, “In that instance, I failed [Lovullo] by not showing up.”
Following his initial absence, Arizona placed Marte on the restricted list before transferring him to the 10-day injured list to treat mild inflammation in his left knee. He later clarified postgame remarks regarding his connection to local supporters, attributing an initial lack of a message to a misunderstanding of a reporter’s question and emphasizing his continued love for the fans.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who previously expressed feeling betrayed by the incident in Boston, described the situation as “a work in progress” following Marte’s public comments. Lovullo noted that admitting mistakes publicly was difficult. The situation marks the second straight season Marte has spent time on the restricted list, following a three-game absence last year when he flew home to the Dominican Republic after his Arizona residence was burglarized.
