Lightning Bolt Strikes Mecca’s Clock Tower During Powerful Thunderstorm

A powerful lightning bolt struck the top of the iconic Makkah Clock Tower during a thunderstorm on Wednesday evening, creating a dramatic scene over the holy city that was captured on camera.

The lightning strike occurred on August 26, 2026, as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved across Mecca. Footage and photographs of the strike quickly spread online, showing the bolt illuminating the sky as it appeared to hit the upper section of the towering landmark.

Dramatic Weather Hits Mecca

The lightning strike came during a period of unsettled weather in Mecca, with rain, thunder and frequent lightning reported across the area.

Saudi weather authorities had issued warnings over potentially severe conditions in parts of the Mecca region. The National Center for Meteorology had warned of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, along with strong winds and the possibility of other weather-related hazards.

The storm also brought dramatic scenes around the Grand Mosque, where rainfall continued while worshippers remained in the area. Images released by Saudi authorities showed lightning illuminating the skies above the mosque and surrounding parts of the city.

Clock Tower Becomes Focus of Lightning Strike

The Makkah Clock Tower, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, became the center of attention when a lightning bolt appeared to make contact with its upper section.

Saudi astronomer and researcher Mulham Hindi shared footage showing the moment the lightning reached the tower. The video captured the bolt against the dark sky during the storm, producing a striking visual that attracted widespread attention online.

Similar lightning strikes have been recorded at the tower during previous thunderstorms. A particularly notable incident occurred in August 2023, when video showed lightning hitting the landmark as heavy rain and strong winds affected Mecca.

Why Does Lightning Strike the Tower?

The tower’s exceptional height makes it a natural point for lightning activity during thunderstorms.

The Makkah Clock Royal Tower rises approximately 601 meters, making it one of the world’s tallest buildings. Its height places the structure closer to storm clouds than many surrounding buildings, increasing its likelihood of becoming a point through which lightning can discharge.

The tower is also equipped with lightning-protection systems designed to safely conduct electrical discharges toward the ground. The purpose of such systems is to protect the structure and its equipment rather than prevent lightning from reaching the building altogether.

That helps explain why dramatic lightning strikes can sometimes be seen around the tower during powerful storms.

No Major Damage Reported

Despite the dramatic appearance of the strike, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties associated with the lightning strike.

The official Saudi account responsible for the affairs of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque also shared an image of the lightning strike without announcing damage from the incident.

The event therefore remained primarily a spectacular weather phenomenon rather than a major disaster.

Lightning Captures Global Attention

Videos of lightning striking prominent landmarks often attract significant attention because of the combination of natural power and recognizable architecture. The latest footage from Mecca was no exception, with the bright electrical discharge briefly lighting up the Clock Tower and surrounding sky.

The incident also serves as a reminder that thunderstorms can develop rapidly and bring dangerous conditions, particularly heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.

For Mecca, such weather events are not unprecedented. The city has experienced powerful summer thunderstorms before, including the major storm of 2023 that brought heavy rain, strong winds and flooding to parts of the area.

The latest lightning strike produced an extraordinary image over one of the world’s most recognizable cities, while highlighting the power of the thunderstorms currently affecting parts of western Saudi Arabia.

This is a short summary. Al Jazeera wrote and published the full report.
