Messi fined for slapping opponent in MLS game

Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer following a heated incident involving Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami’s 2–2 draw on August 19.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee issued Messi an undisclosed fine for violating the league’s policy regarding contact with an opponent’s face, head or neck.

Messi Involved in Heated Exchange

The incident occurred during the second half at Subaru Park as tensions rose between the two sides. Messi and Sullivan exchanged words before the Inter Miami captain made contact with the Philadelphia player around the head and neck area.

The referee did not issue Messi a card for the incident during the match. However, MLS reviewed the situation afterward and subsequently imposed a financial penalty.

Despite the controversy, Messi will not serve a suspension and remains available for Inter Miami’s upcoming MLS matches.

Ian Fray Also Fined

Messi was not the only Inter Miami player punished following the match. Defender Ian Fray also received an undisclosed fine for a separate incident involving contact with an opponent’s head or neck.

The match itself ended in a 2–2 draw, with several disciplinary incidents occurring during a tense finish.

Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan was sent off in stoppage time, but an independent review panel later overturned his red card, making him eligible for the Union’s next match against Austin FC.

Messi Escapes Suspension

The financial punishment means Messi will not miss a game as a result of the incident. The Argentine superstar remains an important part of Inter Miami’s push in the MLS season.

The latest sanction is also notable because it represents Messi’s second disciplinary action since joining Inter Miami, following a previous fine connected to a post-match incident in 2025.

For now, the controversy appears to be settled with financial penalties rather than suspensions, allowing Messi and Inter Miami to focus on their remaining MLS schedule.
