Miami Dominates Florida A&M 77-7 in Record-Breaking Win

The seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes delivered an overwhelming offensive performance, defeating Florida A&M 77-7 in their home opener in Miami Gardens, Florida. Miami generated 856 total yards and 42 first downs, establishing several school and conference benchmarks during the victory.

Historic Offensive Display

Miami built a 49-0 lead by halftime, scoring touchdowns on 11 of their first 12 offensive possessions. Their only non-scoring drive in that stretch was a kneel-down to end the second quarter. The Hurricanes did not face a single third down during the entire first half, becoming only the second team since at least 2000 to accomplish that feat.

The team’s 856 offensive yards established a new program record and marked the second-highest single-game total in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history. Miami’s 42 first downs set a new ACC record and represented the highest total by any Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program since 2019. The 77 points tied Miami’s all-time team record and tied for the fourth-highest scoring performance in ACC history.

Nine individual players scored scrimmage touchdowns for Miami, matching an ACC record spanning the past 30 years. Additionally, 16 different players caught at least one pass, a distribution unseen in FBS college football since 2022.

Quarterback Performance and Depth

Starting quarterback Mensah, who transferred from Duke following the 2025 season, completed 14 of 15 pass attempts for 252 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Through his first two games with Miami, Mensah has completed 41 of 45 passes for 653 yards and eight touchdowns.

“I wanted to play well,” Mensah said regarding his home debut.

Second-half substitute quarterback Luke Nickel added three touchdown passes of his own. Mensah and Nickel became the first power conference teammates to each throw three touchdown passes in the same game since 2016.

Running backs Javian Mallory and Mark Fletcher Jr. each scored two rushing touchdowns. Receiver Malachi Toney led the receiving core with four catches for 96 yards, as six different Miami receivers caught scoring passes.

Game Management and Opponent Response

Miami extended its lead to 77-0 by the end of the third quarter before both teams agreed to shorten the final period. The fourth quarter was reduced from the standard 15 minutes to 10 minutes.

Florida A&M dropped to a 1-2 record on the season after being restricted to 107 total yards and an average of 2.3 yards per play.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal secured his 99th career victory with the result. Addressing the team’s progress, Cristobal noted that “every single week you better get better.”

Miami now holds a 2-0 record for the season.
