Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars: History, Players, Championships and Latest Team Information
The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the NFL’s younger franchises, joining the league in 1995 as an expansion team. Based in Jacksonville, Florida, the Jaguars compete in the AFC South alongside the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans. The team plays its home games at EverBank Stadium and enters the 2026 season after winning the AFC South in 2025.
Jacksonville Jaguars History
The Jaguars were officially awarded an NFL franchise on November 30, 1993, following a major community campaign to bring professional football to Jacksonville. The team played its first regular-season game in 1995 and quickly became competitive.
Jacksonville’s breakthrough came in only its second season. The 1996 Jaguars reached the playoffs and defeated the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round before advancing to the AFC Championship Game. Three years later, Jacksonville again reached the AFC title game after winning the AFC Central with a 14-2 record.
The franchise experienced another memorable playoff run in 2017. Led by a dominant defense and quarterback Blake Bortles, Jacksonville won the AFC South and reached the AFC Championship Game, narrowly losing to the New England Patriots.
The Jaguars returned to the playoffs in 2022 after another AFC South championship. Jacksonville defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in a dramatic Wild Card comeback before losing to the eventual AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Jacksonville has now won three AFC South division titles — 2017, 2022 and 2025 — but has yet to win an AFC Championship or Super Bowl. The franchise entered the 2026 season with an all-time regular-season record of 215-286-0.
Jaguars Legends and Star Players
The Jaguars have produced several memorable players since entering the NFL. Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith, Mark Brunell, Maurice Jones-Drew and Calais Campbell are among the most important figures in franchise history.
Tony Boselli, the first player selected in Jaguars history, became one of the NFL’s premier offensive tackles and is the franchise’s only Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. Fred Taylor remains Jacksonville’s career rushing leader with 11,271 yards, while Jimmy Smith holds the franchise record for receptions with 862. Mark Brunell is the team’s all-time passing leader with 25,698 yards.
The modern Jaguars are led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, while defensive stars Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker remain key pieces of the roster. The team also features two-way standout Travis Hunter, whose ability to contribute at both wide receiver and cornerback has made him one of the NFL’s most intriguing young players.
Jacksonville Jaguars Today
The Jaguars enter the 2026 NFL season under head coach Liam Coen, with owner Shahid Khan continuing to oversee the franchise. Jacksonville is coming off its 2025 AFC South championship and is looking to establish itself as a consistent contender.
The 2026 roster includes several notable additions and returning players. The Jaguars extended edge rusher Travon Walker on a four-year, $110 million deal and also signed tight end Brenton Strange to a three-year, $48 million extension. Jacksonville strengthened its defensive line by acquiring Ruke Orhorhoro from Atlanta and added veteran running backs including Ameer Abdullah and Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Jacksonville opened the 2026 preseason with a 24-20 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Several young defensive players impressed, including third-round defensive tackle Albert Regis, safety Jalen Huskey and fourth-round defensive end Wesley Williams.
The Jaguars are also dealing with a unique home-field situation in 2026. EverBank Stadium is undergoing a major $1.4 billion renovation, reducing capacity to approximately 42,500 for portions of the season. The new “Stadium of the Future” is scheduled to be completed for the 2028 season.
Jacksonville’s regular season begins September 13 against the Cleveland Browns, following a preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 28.
